This book is dedicated to
Daniel W. Root, my deceased older brother, who
loved the idea of my writing. One of the last things he
did before dying at the age of fifty-three of kidney and bone cancer in 2005
was provide me with valuable advice for this second novel in my series starting with my first Christian fiction book, Traces of Discern ment .
We hope you enjoy
Blacklisted: A Trail of Deception, Mystery, and Love .
About the Author
Traces of Discernment was Darline’s first attempt at writing a fictional novel, in which she wove a story while teaching about complicated investigative processes in solving a string of cases derived from satanic activity. Now her second book in this adult Christian fiction series, Blacklisted: A Trail of Deception, Mystery, and Love , continues the story in a fun way with some of the original beloved characters.
Darline has always had a love of words but never thought in a million years she would be writing down the stories from her mind and sharing them.
Providing investigative instruction throughout the first book was only fitting since Darline served as a criminal justice and paralegal academic department head and full professor at several small private colleges and universities for numerous years. She is a graduate of South Texas College of Law—affiliated with Texas A&M University, University of South Florida, and Hillsborough Community College.
Besides a profession in the academic world, she has worked in several law firms and financial institutions. Presently, she pursues other professional opportunities and writes. She thinks becoming a successful full-time author would be nice.
As she gets older, Darline longs to experience more of nature and the artistic things in life and maybe work on a bucket list.
Darline now lives in the southeastern part of the United States, with her remaining family members, while handling the complications of multiple autoimmune diseases.
Character Dedications
1. Character Dedication for Midnight
The first character dedication is for the tiny black male kitten character found by Amanda O’Neal on her first evening near the manor of Huntington Hills College campus.
I fondly named the lovely creature Midnight after the real Midnight, a large, black male feline member of the Pauly Peterson family. They will always be in my heart, as they are some of my best friends. The real Midnight once lived a sad, feral existence until he was recused. Now, he lives a charmed life. Here’s to you, Midnight. This character dedication is for you! Meow.
2. Character Dedications for Timothy and Karen Ruff
Two interesting characters introduced at Huntington Hills College are professors Timothy and Karen Norman. These are dedicated to my brother’s lifelong friend Timothy Ruff and his beloved wife, Karen. My older brother, Daniel, and Timothy were always together when they were growing up. Since they were around our home, Timothy emotionally became like a second brother to me, someone I could always count on. He was fortunate to marry Karen, who likewise became a member of our family.
Timothy, you said if I ever wrote another book, you hoped I’d include your name in the story somehow, so, brother, this is for you. I hope you and Karen enjoy your characters. I love you both very much.
3. Character Dedication for John and Mary Ward and their son, Gregory J. Ward
The character of Chief Braxton Ward is dedicated to a deceased former law enforcement officer, John H. Ward, and his wife, Mary Ward. John started professionally as a motorcycle cop and then a patrol officer and finally retired as a plainclothes undercover police officer in New York City. Out of respect, I created the character of Braxton Ward to thank John and all those who have served, and continue to serve, to protect all of us.
Thank you.
Also, this dedication was done due to the kindness and friendship of their son, Gregory J. Ward, who professionally mentored me at a job I had never done before. Gregory and I remain friends.
Thank you, Gregory. I hope you and your family enjoy this character.
4. Character Dedication for Judith Louise Jewel Zimpher
Gena Jewel, the hospital administrator character at Huntington Hills Hospital, is dedicated to my cousin Judy Jewel Zimpher. Judy is one of the best people and truest Christians I know. As a teacher, she dedicated her professional life to enriching the lives of hundreds of students through education. Now, all her spare time is devoted to her family, husband, and faith. She is also devoted to her church as a lay speaker and servant, as well as involved in several organizations that bring young people to the Lord. She is presently serving as the office manager for Cross Road Farm Ministry.
This is for you, Judy Jewel Zimpher. You are an inspiration.
5. Character Dedications for Glen and Fern Root
The characters of Glen and Fern Beasley were named after my paternal grandparents.
Grandma, I remember.
6. Character Dedications for Michael and Christopher Ranly
Ryan’s full name of Ryan Michael Christopher McFarlan comes from the combination of a deceased cousin’s husband, Michael Ranly, and their son, Christopher. Both Michael and Sheila served in the US Navy.
Rest in peace, Sheila.
7. Special Thank You Dedication
A special thanks to all the members of Root’s Revival Sunday School Group at a nearby traditional Methodist church, New Hope Methodist Church. Without all your love and support, this book would never have been written. You know who you are! You are my Christian family and greatly loved by the Root family forever. Thank you.
Root’s Revival was named in honor of my father, Rev. Wayne G. Root, and my mother, Rachel E. Root. With my mother’s constant devotion and help, he pastored many churches throughout his life as well as traveled the world spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ and taking medical assistance where needed.

Epilogue
Preface
Blacklisted: A Trail of Deception, Mystery, and Love, is the second series novel following Traces of Discernment . These Christian fiction books are considered for adult reading only. I recommend they not be read by children, adolescents, or young teenagers without parental approval, and the prologue should be read before chapter 1.
Although I have dedicated various characters in Blacklisted to people I know, the story comes purely from my imagination and research for detail. Some geographic areas are real, such as the Tampa Bay area in Florida and parts of Ireland, including Dublin and Mullaghmeen Forest, but all events at these locations are purely fictional. Although I never have been to Ireland, I have done my best to depict these beautiful locations and feel honored to utilize them throughout my story.
No aspects of Blacklisted may be changed or utilized in any way except for positive marketing purposes or with the legal approval from the author. All written work of the author is copyrighted and protected.
A great apology and thank-you go out to all the internet sites I visited to do research to obtain accurate information. When writing, I mentally get so into my stories that other aspects, such as research documentation, are neglected. I become so deeply involved in the story that the characters often take over. One publication I utilized for architecture research was W. Fleming’s Arts & Idea , published in 1980 by Holt, Rinehart, and Winston.
Due to several years of unforeseen personal tragedies in my life, I was unable to write for a long time. But suddenly, I finally started to write again, and this story took off. The COVID epidemic and lack of finances delayed the publishing of this book, b
