Prologue: The Mission
December 21, 2086
The submersible destroyer Wynarte sliced through the waters of the Atlantic Ocean at a depth of fifty meters, only four-hours from her destination. The Supreme Command had ordered this mission as a pre-emptive strike and Captain Valentin Chang was determined to carry out his orders precisely as they had been laid out. Three days underwater had brought them this far and Chang knew the other submersible destroyers were nearly in place as well; this mission should go like clockwork .
Captain Chang was an imposing figure wherever he happened to be on the ship, even though his five-five stature was smaller than the vast majority of the men under his command. What he lacked in height, he more than made up for in intensity and devotion to duty. He had spent twenty-six of his fifty-three years in positions of command and had a reputation throughout all the military forces as someone whose authority was never to be challenged. Although silently regarded as ruthless, outwardly he commanded the utmost respect and obedience from his charges.
Chang sat in his quarters, studying his orders for what seemed like the hundredth time since departing Refúgio Seguro – Portugese for Safe Haven, one of two top-secret bases under the man-made islands off Africa’s coast; this one located off the west coast. He smiled with satisfaction, knowing this covert mission was going to swing the imminent war to their advantage before the Allied Nations could even imagine what hit them. It was a masterful plan, one that he had been instrumental in pushing to the Chiefs of Staff and Prime Minister Ungolay. This mission was so secret that no other nation, friendly or otherwise, had even the slightest clue. In fact, only those who planned it and the highly trained captains of each of the warships involved knew of this mission.
A knock on his stateroom door brought Chang to his feet, quickly moving with purpose across the small room. He opened the door to face his second in command, Vice Captain Kwon Van Duquon, whose rail-thin six-foot two frame nearly qualified him as a stick-figure caricature.
"Yes, Vice Captain," Chang asked expectantly as he returned the salute, "What is it?"
"As per your request to be informed of any vessel detected in our immediate vicinity, there are two approaching from the north, Captain."
"Have you identified them Vice Captain?"
"They appear to be merchants, but we cannot be sure at this distance until you verify them."
"I will accompany you to the bridge," Chang replied while gathering his uniform cap. He led the way through a wide corridor to the main bridge and onto the transition platform, which lifted them to the conning bridge.
The officer in charge quickly stepped aside to permit Chang access to the geoscanner, an electronic device with the capability of magnifying objects at distances up to ten-kilometers. Chang deployed the fiber-optic antenna and waited for it to break the surface. A display screen appeared in mid-air, which he studied before touching holographic numbers to program the unknown vessels’ coordinates. Three-dimensional holographic models of the ships appeared above a nearby display table. A swipe of his hand along another section of the display screen caused the small ships to increase in size to where Chang could interpret their identities.
"These are commercial vessels and of no consequence," he said, erasing the display with a wave of his hand across the display screen. "I am going to my room to retire. Inform me of any other questionable vessels and also when we reach our destination." He returned their salutes and stepped onto the transition platform, which descended into the main bridge; from there he returned to his quarters.
Chang knew he would not rest until this crucial mission was completed, and didn’t want to waste time standing around with those he considered inferior; he would rather be alone. Stretched out on his bunk with hands behind his head and legs crossed at the ankles, he permitted his mind to go over the plan once more. Wynarte was one of two submersible Destroyers that departed Refúgio Seguro three days ago. They could have crossed the Atlantic Ocean in a fraction of that time topside, but being underwater and running in silence takes longer. No matter, all nine warships were bearing missiles carrying small nuclear warheads, each capable of destroying a large city and each ship had its own target or targets. There would be no communication with Command or with each other until every warship was in place and ready. At precisely 0300 hours, Greenwich Mean Time, tomorrow morning, December 22, 2086, all nine submersible destroyers would surface in their respective assigned positions and await the one-word code that would begin a cataclysmic event the world had never before seen: PRIMERO – Spanish for first .
All nine warships should be in place by 2300 hours tonight, awaiting the appointed time. Wynarte was to lay off the east coast of Florida with three heavily populated United States targets – Atlanta, Orlando, and Jacksonville. At precisely the same instant Wynarte was firing its three missiles, the Norwontek would be firing on New York City, Washington DC, Toronto, and Montreal, in the United States and Canada. These attacks would be well after dark at 10:00 pm local time. The date of the attacks was
