CHAPTER ONE
WAKING UP
O wen couldn’t understand what was happening, a powerful blast hit him, and to his amazement, all of a sudden, his bondage of years of suffering had suddenly ended. He took a deep breath to make sure enough it was happening. The hold Mac Nain had over him all those years was suddenly broken, completely gone. The man standing there in front of him, the new Alpha Noah Mac Kenzie, had somehow broken the bond.
Owen was standing there, unsteady. It all happened so fast; as he watched this young man in his early twenties facing old Mac Nain with no fear whatsoever in his eyes. He had to be very powerful to do that.
Owen had never been so confused in his life. Next to the Alpha was a woman looking so much like Owen’s own mate that a knife almost pierced his heart. She was about to get married to the Alpha, but that could not be possible; she was still mated to him, he could still feel her through their bond. They had been mated against their wills by Mac Nain’s order on the last full moon two days earlier. It was not possible that it was her standing there right in front of him. The only logical explanation was that it had to be the sister that he had heard talks about.
He had never met her in person, but she was as stunning as her sister. No wonder that the new Alpha had taken her as his mate, but there was no time to think about that at the moment. Owen needed to get out of there as soon as possible; he understood that this was a chance he would never have again anytime soon, luckily his body understood faster than his brain, and soon enough, he was running out of the church like a scared rabbit. Straight to the car he had been driving to get there. He slammed the door and took off at high speed to get away as fast a possible.
He didn’t know where he was going, but he was aware that this would be his only chance to get away from Mac Nain’s claws. He could smell freedom; he was starving for it and needed it like breathing. He was horrified as his mind started to catch up with what was going on. Slowly awakening from the nightmare and realizing everything that he had done under Mac Nain’s control, but now was no time for regrets. He needed to run as far and fast as he could before Mac Nain realized that he no longer had any control over him. He needed money, and his passport, and a ticket out of Canada as soon as possible.
He drove like a madman back to Mac Nain’s mansion. There he had everything he needed to make a run for it. As he arrived, the house was in a frenzy, people running around in panic, packing things into cars in a hurry. He didn’t stop to ask anybody what was going on. The only thing on his mind was getting his stuff and be out of there. He quickly got up to his room and grabbed what he needed with the already packed bag under his bed, waiting for the right time to use it. He did not have a lot of personal belongings, and he left most of them behind. Whatever he needed, he would get on the way. He ran back outside.
“Owen! What is going on?” Somebody suddenly called out behind him. He turned around to face Larna, the wife of Blair, Mac Nain’s grandson. “We got orders to clear out and head north. What happened at the Mac Kenzie’s?”
He didn’t know what to tell her, and he needed to move before anybody returned; if not, it would be too late.
“It all went to hell. Everybody will be back soon. Just keep packing and get ready to leave.” He told her just to get her off his back. He had no idea what she was talking about. Why was Mac Nain making everybody leave? It made no sense. Had anything else happened since he left Mac Nain’s side? He didn’t care either way. Time was running out, and they would soon be back, and he couldn’t let that happen.
“Where are you going?” she kept bugging him.
“I got orders from Mac Nain. What business is that of yours?” He almost shouted at her and left her there with an open mouth as he ran back to the car. Then he hit the road. He had no clue when Mac Nain would realize that he was gone. He could only hope that he didn’t notice because of all the mess that was going on. He did not look behind him even once as he drove away from the estate.
The closest airport would be Calgary, and that was where he was heading. He knew that they would find the car at the airport sooner rather than later, and hopefully, it would be much later. It was crowded in the parking lot when he finally arrived, and it took some time to find a free space. Owen grabbed his bag from the back seat and headed for the terminal. His priority was to get a ticket out of there as soon as possible. He ran to the first counter that he found available.
“Good evening. How can I help you, sir?” an attractive stewardess asked him.
“I need a ticket to Edinburgh. The first flight you have out of here with a connection if necessary. It’s an emergency, so anything that you have will do.”
“One moment, sir, just relax, and I will check when the next flight is due. Don’t worry; we will have you on a plane in no time,” she said. She could see that he was nervous. He needed to calm down so that she wouldn’t call the security.
“The next flight available is at 22:05. It’s leaving for Heathrow, and then you have a connection flight from there to Edinburgh. You will arrive in Edinburgh at approximately 7:00 p.m. tomorrow.”
“That sounds great. How much is the ticket?” Owen was happy to get out of there fast, not waiting too long. That left them almost no time to catch up with him until he was in the air.
“That’s 799$, sir. I need your passport as well.” She smiled at him. He passed her the passport and paid her with cash.
“Have a nice flight, sir.” She added and handed him the ticket.
Owen thanked her, grabbed his bag, and walked over to the check-in line. In the security check, they asked him what his business was in Scotland. The answer was easy. Owen was going back home even though there was nobody to go back to since his parents had died when he was about five years old. His aunt and uncle had taken care of him since his parents passed. They took him from Scotland to raise him in Canada, but he still wanted to go back there, too, where he was born, and to have a fresh start. To go and find his old home and hideaway places in the highlands where nobody would find him was a dream he had for years. He was twenty-five now, and he had plenty of money that his parents left behind; he just needed to go to Edinburgh to get his hands on them.
His aunt and uncle had waited for him to turn twenty-five so they could get their hands on his money. They demanded that it would be the payment for all the years they had taken care of him. If that what you call it. After long years of abuse and on the edge of starvation sometimes, it would be a lie to say that they had taken care of him all these years. The only good thing he got from his aunt’s complaints was the valuable information he would eventually need as he arrived back in Scotland. While arguing with her husband over his money, she mentioned a solicitor in Edinburgh handling all his parents’ assets.
Luckily he had gotten his name as well. He had written it down not to forget this valued information. It was now in his bag with only a few belongings as he made his way back home.
His aunt and uncle had children of their own, and unlike how they treated him, they took excellent care of them. Owen had always been treated like scum and an outsider, and when he got old enough, they dumped him into the hand of Malcolm Mac Nain, their leading Alpha. That had not made the situation any better. Luckily for him, Mac Nain had not known about the money. If he had known, he would have made sure Owen would have handed them over to him a long time ago. He was all alone with nobody to care for him; he didn’t have any friends, and he was always expected to follow the rules no matter who gave them. His only escape from reality was exe
