Chapter One

Marsean

T oxin was on that good bullshit today. I couldn’t talk about him, though, because I was here for it all. I laughed as we sat outside the car when Toxin made the phone call. We were nowhere near where we had his family stashed but, Smoke didn’t need to know all that.
“You need to stop playing with people like that. He’s probably over there going off because he thinks that you killed one of his people,” I said and laughed.
“Fuck him. He wasn’t worried about my feelings when he shot Jon-Jon. So, in my book, it’s fuck him and all that he stands for. I’m shocked that he even came out to check on his folks. I know it fucked his head up, but that’s the damn point. I want him to know that it’s me who has his folks stashed. Maybe then he’ll understand the logic behind cause and effect. Him shooting Jon-Jon because he was on his period caused his whole damn existence to be in jeopardy. He’s a fuck boy of the worst kind. He doesn’t give a shit about his people. If he did, his dumb ass wouldn’t have done the shit he did,” he told me.
“True, so how are we gonna play this out? You just said he doesn’t care about his people, so why did we go get they asses?” I asked.
“I have eyes on him. I don’t want to leave the hospital until I look bro in his eyes. Now, if he happens to find some balls and a heart to come directly at me, then I’ll deal with him. Right now, Jon-Jon is the main priority. We have his people to force his hand. Even though he doesn't give two fucks about them, he’s the type to try to rescue them just for the sake of saving his rep,” he said.
“Damn, I taught you well, I see,” I said and laughed.
“Fuck you, nigga. It’s not smart for us to kill his ass now because that’s exactly what he wants to happen. His ass is on high alert. On top of that, two detectives are snooping around and shit. I knew that was gonna happen, though, because he’s a gunshot victim. Hospitals have to report gunshot victims to the police,” he said.
I shook my head as he finished off one blunt just to spark up another one. His nerves were all fucked up like everyone else’s. Him smoking back to back helped him stay calm. I knew Smoke was gonna come looking for Toxin, which we were all hoping for.
“You know he’s gonna try to find you, right?” I asked.
“Nigga, he knows where the fuck I am. He won’t bring his ass up here, though,” he said.
“You really think he won’t? If it was me, I would’ve been on you as soon as the call ended,” I told him.
“That nigga built different from us. Have you heard anything about the last situation we took care of?” he asked.
I knew he was talking ’bout me killing Santoya. Now I had to keep my head on a swivel because along with looking out for Smoke, I knew Santoya’s people would be coming sooner or later. The fact that they still hadn’t popped up meant that they were somewhere watching and waiting.
“You know they will come for you. It’s not gonna take long for them to figure out that it was you,” Toxin said.
He was right, but I honestly didn’t care one way or the other. Esteban was a bitch, so I knew they weren’t gonna be too heartbroken about his disappearance. Santoya, on the other hand, ran every fucking thing.
“If they come for me on some true gangster shit, I’ll handle it. I have nothing but good bullshit on my hands anyway. It seems like after Satch died, shit has been all kinds of crazy. This trial shit is on my damn nerves too. I knew that with the way Auntie was moving, her death would come soon enough. The fact that Talia is the one who did it is the part that’s fucking with me. You know everybody trying to be a hitta these days until you shoot somebody and watch their life slip away. It’s gonna change her if it hasn’t already,” I told him.
“You gotta be shitting me. Talia is strong as hell. She’ll be straight. I’m not gonna say that it won’t mess with her head, but she’s a fighter for sure. Even after all the shit she’s been through in the last couple of months, she’s still standing. It was self-defense anyway. She did what she had to do. It was either her or Auntie,” he said and shrugged.
“You might be right about that. I’m still gonna keep my eye on her, though,” I told him.
“I know you will, with your in love ass,” he said and put out his blunt.
“Fuck you,” I said.
We walked into the waiting area where everyone was still posted up. I expected half of the niggas to be gone by now, but they weren’t. Jon-Jon had all the hood niggas in one spot tonight.
“You want to go take a shower and change clothes?” Talia asked.
I knew that she was worried about me. This was the first place we came when we got off the plane. We hadn’t even checked into our hotel yet. She looked tired as shit, but I knew she wasn’t leaving without me no matter how tired she was.
“I guess we can do that. I know I could use a couple hours of sleep. You look like you need some too. Let me tell Toxin that we’re going to head out but, we’ll be back a little later,” I told her and gave her a kiss.
As I walked back to where Toxin was, I could see that Shonda was still emotional as hell.
“You good?” I asked her just out of curiosity.
“Yeah, it’s just crazy that Jon-Jon is back there looking like he’s asleep when he could be dead. I never thought that someone would ever try to kill any of y’all. If someone can get to y’all then they can get to anybody. I hope he pulls through. If he doesn’t, then Toxin is only gonna get worse,” Shonda said.
“What’s up with you and Toxin? I see y’all getting pretty close,” I asked.
“Nah, nothing is going on over here but friendship. I was up and at the house when he got the call. He hasn’t been his usual self since then. I’m just here as a friend. Trust and believe the Shonda and Toxin ship has sailed and will never return,” she said with her mouth but, her eyes were saying something else as he looked at him but talked to me.
“He told me that you’re trying to get your shit together. That’s a good look. Everyone has a past, but as long as you’re working to make your future better than your past, it’s all good. Talia and I are going to the hotel to take a shower and get some rest before coming back. You can catch a ride to your hotel if you want,” I offered.
“No, I’ll be fine,” she said.
I walked away and continued to make my way to Toxin. Just like he had been doing since we got back in the waiting area, he was standing in front of the window and looking out.
“Yo, Talia and I are gonna head out. Hit me up if you need me to get you something on my way back in,” I told him.
He didn’t say anything. The head nod he gave me was fine. I walked back over to Talia and took her by the hand. We were quiet during the elevator ride and car ride. I never thought that one of us would be laid up like this, as crazy as it sounds. We’ve been in the streets for years, and other than the occasional fistfight, no one had ever tried us like Smoke was doing now.
“I don’t want to lose you,” she said quietly.
I reached over the center console of the car and took her hand in mine. She was crying, but not a loud boo-hoo cry. It was one of those silent ones. Tears were streaming down her face. I could hear the pain in her voice. Hearing her like this broke my heart more than anything.
“You won’t lose me. I’m not going anywhere,” I promised.
“How can you tell me that? You don’t know what they have waiting for you. Do you really think that Jon-Jon, Toxin, and Ric are the only people they’re out for? Well, I don’t. I know your name is on that list too. If they come at Toxin, then you are gonna come for them without thinking about it,” she said.
I wanted to tell her that she was wrong, but I couldn’t. I didn’t have a say so in what other people were doing or planning to do. The only thing that I could do was try to protect her and myself the best way I could. However, she was right as fuck. If anyone came at Toxin, it was gonna be hell and more coming back at them.
“Baby, I can do all I can to protect us,” I told her.
“One of these days, that won’t be enough. I know that for sure as long as you’re in the streets,” she said.
“So, what are you saying, Talia?” I asked.
I really wanted to know what she was getting at. There had to be a reason for her bringing it up.
“Nothing,” she mumbled.
“Oh, nah, don’t do that. If you got something on your mind, then spill that shit,” I told her.
“It’s just that you’re out here putting yourself in danger
