CHAPTER 1 THE GLASSHOUSE
The Candid satellite blasts off. It’s the second stage of a project launched after an unseen meteorite landed on earth and, a week later, no human was able to eat food. The satellite is carrying a greeting from all the major nations of the world to any intelligent life forms who can decipher its simple hidden code. However, many African nations are complaining, as a large number of the continent’s languages haven’t been included.
Reporter Diana Fellows is on the satellite launch site. Meanwhile, the newspaper owner’s wife, Mrs Natasha Brode, has been left to report on the wilderness survival challenge (WSC) in Nigeria. Her husband gave her the story even though it means her going to a war-torn country. While Natasha is in Africa, her husband, Donald Brode, spends the night with his mistress, Wendy Staide.
Donald then has a romantic night out with an attractive young woman named Amanda James. Now a former mistress, Wendy Staide has fulfilled her lifelong dream. She has a job in the high-end fashion industry. It’s 11:00 p.m. on a Friday. Donald and Amanda go to a five-star hotel. Donald immediately orders room service. He shows off by ordering the most expensive e-champagne the hotel has to offer. Not even a power cut spoils the mood.
“Another blackout,” says Amanda.
Donald says, “It’s affecting all my plans for the night.”
They kiss softly.

The e-meal was invented by Brendon Crawford in 2002. It’s related to the e-cigarette. The perfume bottle is half the size of a man’s little finger. It must be placed inside a specialized compartment within your mobile phone. A second home button is located at the top of all modern mobile phones. If you press and hold it, you’ll be directed to the e-meal app. Simply choose the e-spray you want.
First, the actual organic meal is fermented into various digestive fluids such as lactic acid. The consumer’s DNA is then printed onto the acid until the solution dissolves. Following deliquescence, the substance is filtered and condenses into your phone via a wireless connection. All you need is a modern mobile phone, the e-meal app, and an e-straw. Now you can drink a milkshake directly from your phone.
The e-meals are surprisingly cheap and available to anyone. Crawford’s invention has dramatically improved dental hygiene, mainly because users don’t need to chew e-meals. However, vegetarians protest about the ethics of this new product. Various scientists suggest that e-meals consist of decomposed organisms and may contain methane and hydrogen sulphide. Crawford claims he pays no serious attention to protesters. Nevertheless, various health watchdogs continue to warn consumers about the fact that e-meals carry no nutritional value.
Recent reports suggest obesity issues are being amplified by e-meals. Meanwhile, fashion circles insist fat is in, and thin is out.

Thomas Royce’s team wins the final leg of the wilderness survival challenge. The final leg was held near the river delta in Nigeria. Team Royce claims the World Cup for the third year in a row. Royce has captained the team for two years, since the former captain, Gareth Read, retired. Thomas got the job because of his survival expertise and for his knowledge of plants and animals. His number two is Glenn Williams. They’ve been on the same team for fifteen years. Glenn is twenty years older than Thomas and is officially retiring after this year’s WSC. The final member of their team is Carl Jones. He’s been Thomas’s best friend since infant school. The last leg of the WSC is watched by astrologer Beth Wotishka.
Dr Thomas Royce is watching the news. Reports warn children about a new street game called jumping. Modern cars use modern fermion resonators, which means cars become unphysical once the engine is switched on. Serious crashes are now impossible. The children run across the road from one side of the pavement to the other side. They can be killed if their jump isn’t timed perfectly.
Thomas arrives at his office. He’s visited by Beth Wotishka. He hasn’t even had a chance to relax. Beth informs him that the British Space Agency (BSA) has found a new planet that can support human life. It’s been named Arch after the discoverer, Beth’s dad, Dr Archibald Wotishka. The promoter of the wilderness survival challenge will create a one-off sports event. He’ll call it the Chorathlon.
Thomas Royce is offered the opportunity to lead the English survivor team. First they’ll need to obtain a pilot’s licence. Nowadays, it isn’t unusual for members of the general public to hold a space shuttle pilot licence. Thomas accepts Beth’s offer without hesitation. Thomas used to be a history teacher, and his hero is Captain Scott of the Antarctic . If Thomas and his teammates successfully pass their astronaut licence exam, he’ll call his spaceship the Terra No va 2 .
Beth Wotishka applies to be the fourth member of the Terra Nova 2 team, TNT. Thomas Royce will be captain, and as expected, he’ll be joined by his number two, Glenn Williams. The third member will be Carl Jones. No one knows that Carl’s gambling debts have forced him to hide from loan sharks.
Fifty-year-old Adam Gora is an agoraphobic loan shark. It’s ten o’clock on a Thursday night, and he’s watching Club Run TV . The host is Karen Moss. This program is an upgrade of an internet map. You can look inside any club and any street live. All you need is the address. Adam tries his local pub, but the Cricketer and Golfer Pub is empty, so he presses the red button on his remote control. He goes to a beach party in Ibiza instead.
The internet has hundreds of free concerts. Top DJ Leroy Andrews is at home in Birmingham, but he’s still the DJ in Club Banger, Tenerife. Three other big DJs will be performing too. Their sets are at different locations. This is a soundclash. Adam sends a text message to Leroy Andrews. He asks Leroy to play the song “Trust Me” by Gear. Adam gets a phone call while he waits. It’s a man named Leon Oswald. Leon has kidnapped Carl Jones. Leon puts Adam on speakerphone.
Adam tells Carl to repay his loan by Saturday. Carl apologizes but confesses he hasn’t got that kind of money. Adam threatens to castrate Carl. He doesn’t say it blatantly—he simply introduces Carl to Leon’s knife. Then Adam asks Carl a question. “Do you know how long it takes for a man to refill sperm?”
Carl says no.
Adam says, “The full process takes about sixty-five days. During spermatogenesis, your testicles make several million sperm per day—about fifteen hundred per second. By the end of the full sperm production cycle, you will have regenerated up to eight billion sperm.” Adam asks if Carl understands the point he’s trying to make.
The terrified Carl says yes.
