Where we left off…

“Del, we need to leave, honey. We’re so late.”
When the woman finally looked up from her phone, Charlie had her eyes on me with a frown on her face. Asia and the man that she had been in conversation with both looked at the woman who had just come in.
“She called you Del, who is she?” Charlie questioned from beside me, but I didn’t respond.
My eyes were on the mystery woman while I had the same question that Charlie had circling in my head. The bitch knew my name, and the entire situation felt off.
The woman picked up on the tension and stared back at me with an agitated expression, and then she broke that stare to look at the guy who had been talking to Asia.
I didn’t know who the fuck she was or how she knew my name, but for the second time that day, my gut was telling me that something wasn’t right. However, before I could open my mouth to verbalize it, dude was reaching for his gun, and I was reaching for mine.
Delvin “Fray” Simmons

“D ad! What are you doing?”
Dad?
My eyes moved from Asia to the man standing in front of her. His hand was still on his side, and mine was behind me. It was clear that neither of us were willing to relinquish contact with the weapons that were on our bodies, as if sensing that we needed to protect the people who were important to us. My thoughts were on Charlie while I assumed his were on the mystery woman who had just said my name.
“Del, relax.” She eased up as she addressed who I assumed was her husband.
I noticed that they both wore wedding rings.
Attempting to further relieve the tension of the situation, I lowered my hand. When he noticed that I did, he followed suit.
“You know my father?” Asia then said as her eyes darted back and forth between me and him. She appeared to be just as confused as I was.
“No.”
I kept eye contact with him, and his expression didn’t change.
“Wait, I’m confused. You called him Del.” Charlie surveyed everyone’s faces before she landed on Asia’s mother.
“I didn’t call him Del. I was speaking to my husband, Delvin.”
I know this is a small fucking world, but my father was born and raised in Chicago. That was about the only thing that I knew for sure about him. There was no way that he should be here in Atlanta, married with a kid.
From what little I knew about the man who donated sperm for me, he was an abusive asshole. He was in the streets, and not what should have turned out to be the type of man who was standing in front of me. This man had a family who he seemed to care about. The man I’d heard stories about only cared about himself.
“His name is Delvin.” Charlie looked at me and then Asia’s father.
“Well, Fray must be your last name then, right?
Asia’s face scrunched up as she looked at me, but I still had my eyes on her father. We didn’t look alike, in my opinion, but I was my mother’s twin, so I couldn’t go by that.
I had never even seen a picture of my father because of the toxic relationship that my mother had with him. As far as I grew up believing, she had totally erased him from my life and hers.
“No, Simmons,” Charlie answered for me when I didn’t.
As soon as she announced my last name, which was thanks to my mother, the expression that Asia’s father provided gave away the fact that he and I had the same thought.
“Oh, I was about to say, you could be my long lost brother. You’re both from Chicago too. I can’t believe I didn’t know your real name.”
Asia smiled, and I could tell that she was amused by the entire thing, assuming it was a coincidence, but the way her father was studying me told me exactly what I needed to know.
This muthafucker was the man who got my mother pregnant and beat the shit out of her so much that she went into hiding and never even told him about me. Now, here he was with a perfect little family like he deserved that shit.
“Nonsense. Your father doesn’t have any outside children, so there’s no way. Why would you even think such a thing? It’s most definitely a coincidence.”
Asia’s another looked from me to her husband with an uncertainly that she was waiting for him to erase. The fucked up part was that he couldn’t. I indeed was an outside child. We shared DNA, whether I liked it or not.
“Charlie, let’s go.”
I took a step toward her and grabbed her hand so that we could leave. I had no interest in standing there and sharing a conversation with the man who basically wasn’t shit to my mother, but seemed to get it all together enough to have this cookie cutter family.
I could sense that Charlie wanted to debate me on it, but she followed my lead instead and headed toward the door. I appreciated it because I wasn’t in the mood for a explanation or a family reunion.
But, of course, Charlie being Charlie, she had to at least say something to try and apologize for my behavior.
“It was nice to meet both of you,” she said over her shoulder just before we exited the building.
When we made it to my car, I opened her door, let her him, and then rounded the front to get into the driver’s side.
Charlie just stared at me like she was waiting for me to say something, but I simply started my car and pulled out of her parking lot. She let it go as long as she could before she brought up the situation that we had just left behind.
“Was that him? Your father?”
I gripped my steering wheel and glanced her way. I had a delayed reaction before I actually responded, and all I said was no .
“Fray, you have the same name, he’s from Chicago, and the way he looked at you when I said your last name. If he was with your mother like that then he would recognize her last name, and he did.”
“Making a baby doesn’t make you a father. He’s not my fucking father.”
“Aren’t you even curious about him? I know you’ve never talked about him, but if he’s your father, then Asia is your sister. If nothing else, aren’t you at least curious about—”
“Charlie, leave it alone. I’m not curious about a damn thing that’s connected to him. The man that got my mother pregnant used to beat her. She never even told him about me specifically for that reason. That muthafucker back there has a whole new life. I bet he ain’t never put his hands on her, the way he did my mother, so fuck him. Don’t bring that shit up again. Let’s just go have lunch. I’m spending the day with you, and that’s all I care about right now.”
The disappointed look on Charlie’s face had me feeling bad. I wasn’t really yelling, but my feelings on the matter were clear. She hadn’t done anything to me, but I was taking out my frustration on her, when I knew that she just genuinely cared. Problem was, at the moment, I couldn’t help that.
After driving in silence for a few more minutes, my eyes were on Charlie, who was looking out the passenger side window. She was deep in thought, and I knew her well enough to know that her feelings were hurt by my reaction.
No matter how pissed I was, I had no right taking it out on her, so I had to fix it. If my Charlie wasn’t happy, then I wasn’t doing my job. Covering her hand with mine, I linked our fingers and lifted hers, bringing it to me. After a kiss on her wrist, I let it go, and her eyes were on me again.
“Can we just enjoy lunch?”
She nodded and delivered a forced smile. I’d make it up to her, but right now, I couldn’t help the way I felt.

Charlie and I managed to spend the rest of the day together without discussing what happened at her office. Not because she didn’t want to, but more so because she was being my peace.
After lunch, we came back to my place to chill. She still kept quiet about it, but I could see the questions lingering every time she looked at me. Instead of stressing me about it, she made dinner for us, and then I physically made up to her for the way I reacted earlier.
Now she was asleep in my bed, tangled in the sheets while I stood in the doorway watching how beautiful and peaceful she looked.
I wanted that same peace, but seeing my father today was preventing me from getting anywhere close to it. After checking the time and realizing it was after two in the morning, I inhaled and released it slowly before I walked over to my nightstand where my phone rested.
It was late as hell, and I knew my mother was asleep, but I needed to know for sure that what my gut was telling me was right. Even if I had no intention of doing anything with the information, I couldn’t help the urge to want to know for sure.
Once I had my phone, I made my way over to Charlie, pulled the covers up over her shoulder, and kissed her on the temple before leaving my room.
