Chapter 1
Looking around the tree that I was high up in, I sighed. It would seem that no one had followed me, and they were not looking for me right this moment either.
Well, for the moment, I can relax and think about what to do now that I have left the pack. Sitting down, I leaned against the tree and breathed in the afternoon air. It seemed fresher here than what I was used to at the cove where the pack resided. I let a small smile grace my lips as I thought back on the last hour and a half and everything that had happened in that short amount of time.
My father had come into the cave behind the waterfall that the western wolf pack used and headed straight for me. I knew something was going to happen when I saw the look on his face. Putting the blanket that I was folding down, I stood and faced him. I took a few steps back when he came closer than I was willing to let him. As his eyes narrowed, I watched wolves and demons gather around us. I saw Kyle step up next to Kevin in the crowd to my left.
They shared a concerned look before watching the scene in front of them unfold with caution. I almost let a smile grace my lips at their concern but knew that nothing good would come of it from the demon in front of me.
“Saya, you did not come when you were called. Why?”
Turning my full attention back to the demon who was supposed to be my father, I gave him an almost mocking smile. “I was busy folding blankets like you ordered.” My answer was straightforward, as was my tone of voice and attitude toward him. Unlike many in the pack, I did not cower in front of my father even though he was a large demon.
“You know what will happen if you do not do as you are told.”
I glared at him and knew that it would do me no good. I resisted the urge to clutch my left shoulder in remembered pain. “You also told me to fold the blankets. I was doing what you told me to do. I had not finished folding them when you called unless you want to finish what I started?” I saw rage flash in his eyes before he reached for me, and I felt the terror run through my veins that generally did when he reached for me.
Stepping away from his reaching hand, I put the stack of blankets between us. I knew that demons and wolves were gathered behind me, but they were the least of my concerns right now. Getting to the cave entrance was the only thing I cared about at the moment.
“I will not let you touch me.”
As we moved, so did the demons around us. Every step he took toward me, I would retreat that step with two of my own as his stride was longer than my own.
“I am your father, and you will stand still, child.” Smiling another mocking smile, I turned and dashed past the demons that had just moved away from me. Hitting the cave entrance, I stopped and looked over my shoulder to see my father moving toward me. My eyes widened, making me turn and run out of the cove.
“You can’t run from me, Saya!”
Reaching the trees, I stopped and looked over my shoulder again to see my father standing at the cave entrance with Kevin and Kyle standing beside him, watching me. Nodding at them, I ran into the woods. I ran for what could have been hours before stopping on a thick tree branch and looking around . . .
I was jerked from my thoughts as I felt two familiar demonic energies moving toward me. Standing, I turned in the direction they were coming from and waited. After a few moments, one stopped while the other kept moving toward me until Kevin stopped on a branch a few feet away from the one I was standing on.
“Kevin, what are you and Kyle doing here?” I was shocked to see that they had followed me so soon after leaving, but I was also glad to see them.
“Saya, you know you cannot hide from him if we can find you this quickly.” The smirk on his face only made me madder at his confidence. Shaking my head at him, I braced my hands on my hips and glared at him.
“You never answered my first question, Kevin.”
He turned away from me and looked through the branches and leaves at the starry night sky. Glaring at him was doing me no good, so I settled for watching him.
“I came to see why you left.” His softly spoken words only made me shake my head at him again.
“You know damn well why I left the pack, Kevin. You and Kyle both knew that this event was coming.”
When he turned toward me, I could have hit him. He gave me that stupid grin that always told me he knew more than he let on.
“Of course we always knew it was going to happen.”
Something in the way he said that sentence told me that Kyle was hiding in the trees closer than I initially thought he was. I wondered what he saw for a moment but quickly shook that thought away. Looking back at Kevin, I waited for him to answer my unasked question.
“Christopher, your father.” Softly clapping my hands caused him to glare at me for mocking him. My temper was starting to rise at the ignorance he pretended to possess.
“What gave you the first clue?”
Kevin was the son of the leader of the pack that my father was part of. He was also my friend, but there were times when all he did was piss me off no matter what he did for me when I needed it. He knew he was pissing me off and was taking a strange kind of joy out of the fact at this moment.
“The way you look at him.”
I rolled my eyes at the thought that I had been caught glaring at my father after what he did to my mother. There was no wolf in the pack who did not know my hatred for my father.
I looked up at the moon through the branches and leaves and saw it was almost full. The gathering would occur in less than a week, about two or three days. I wondered if I should bother going since I was gone from the pack. Would they make me return, or would they not care and see me as just a nuisance to the pack? It would be interesting to find out that information.
“There is no one back there that likes me even a little.” My voice almost sounded wistful to my ears, but it was more resigned than anything. Glancing at Kevin, I saw the hurt in his eyes.
“That is not true.”
I was not fond of hurting him or Kyle. Both of them had helped me so much, but it was necessary at this moment.
“Oh really.” Dropping my arms to my sides, I continued to watch the moon. “Then tell me who does not hate me right now back at that cove?”
This time Kevin did not reply right away like he usually would. This little fact told me something was bothering him. It was something that made reading him easier.
“Well?”
He turned away from me when I turned to face him to gauge his reaction to whatever he was going to say next.
“Well, Kyle and I like you. Does that not count for something?”
Sighing, I tried to get him to look at me without touching him, but he would not move, so I moved to stand in front of him. I studied his face for a moment before smiling slightly. “Kevin, I know that. Also, you are not back there.” Shaking my head slightly, I continued, “I cannot live like that. I cannot live with the knowledge that someone might kill me while I slept just because they do not like me or my father thought my death was necessary. I do not know what happened to him. He used to be such a loving demon.”
I could feel the tension building in his frame, which confused me to a certain extent.
“I will not let them hurt you, Saya. You know that, right? Kyle will not either.”
I looked at him for a moment before breaking down in a fit of giggles that only made him glare at me. When I finally had control of my laughter, he was looking to the left, with a pout on his handsome face.
“I know you will protect me, Kevin.” My words were softly spoken and thankfully free of any humor that may have remained from the giggling fit I had. “This is just something that I have to do for myself, that is all. It’s not like you will never see me again.”
It was Kevin’s turn to be confused if the frown he sent me was any indication. “And what is it that you have to do, Saya?”
I debated not answering him straightforwardly but decided that it was a little mean of me to keep them both in the dark about what I was going to do. Even though Kyle was not here, Kevin would tell him everything that I told him.
“I have to get stronger.
