Description

The annual fair at Moretonhampstead, on the edge of Dartmoor, usually attracts a motley bunch of ne'er-do-wells. The year 1835 is no different from the others in this respect, only this time, among the miscreants, are Buckingham Joe and his sidekick commonly known as Dick Turpin. They are there with only one thing in mind, to deprive the wealthier citizens of their valued possessions, and they will go to all ends to achieve their aim. The unfortunate farmer, Jonathan May, on his way home from the fair, happens to be the unlucky one as he is savagely attacked by the brutal duo. He puts up a brave fight, but to no avail.

The author wishes to thank Tim Berners-Lee (the inventor of the interweb), without whom the research would have been far more time consuming and far less fun. Similarly to the developers of the various search engines available to surfers on the aforementioned facility.
The British Library, London, for their friendly assistance in access to various 19 th -century newspapers and for use of their extensive repository at the British Newspaper Archive website.
Last but not least, the miscreants and ne’er-do-wells associated with Biddenden in the county of Kent, who, over the centuries, initially inspired the author into investigating the activities of Buckingham Joe and his contemporaries.
Preface
Despite the nature of the main crime involved in this tale, only a handful of publications have ever occurred that discuss the details of the case:
