T his story is about a man fresh out of the army and a woman who works as a barmaid at Bra Drop.
Stephen got out of the army after turning twenty years old. He made it back to his hometown, which is Celina, Ohio. He got off the bus and proceeded to walk home. Well, while walking toward home, he went past a bar called Bra Drop.
“Oh, I think I’ll just go in and get me a drink. After all this time, I do need a good stiff drink.”
So he went in there and sat down, then the barmaid came to him.
“What can I get you, sir?” The barmaid was half naked.
“Oh, can you show me your titties?”
“How dare you!”
“Well, you’re dressed like a w——, so I assumed that that’s what you’re for—to show your titties.”
“May I help you? What kind of drink do you want?”
“Oh, I’ll just take a beer. Thank you. Drafted or real cold, hopefully really cold. Thank you.”
The barmaid proceeded to get the drink and went to the bar. She brought the beer back, and the guy kept flirting with her.
“Could you tell me what your name is?”
“It’s Camille.”
“And about how old are you?”
“I just turned eighteen.”
“And why are you working here if you just turned eighteen?”
“’Cause there’s only the jobs and it’s available.”
“Well, if you don’t want to be flirted at, you shouldn’t be dressed like that.”
“Who are you to tell me I should dress differently? You’re not my father.”
“I’ll bet you, your dad does not like what you you’re dressed.”
“Yeah, he doesn’t like it, but he can’t stop me from working.”
“Would you like to dance?”
“No, oh, wait a minute. I’ll think about it right now. No.”
“Okay, I did ask well.”
Then Stephen drank a few drinks, and then he ended up leaving. He headed back home, back to his family. His mother, Luna, and his father, Peter, along with his siblings, were all happy to see him back—all but his dad. His dad threw a fit and told him if he couldn’t work to make a living, he needed to get the hell out.
Meanwhile, on the other side, on Camille’s family . . .
Camille went home after work and met up with her mom and dad, Peggy and Rick. She happened to be dressed in her sexy outfit when she went home. Her dad got angry and proceeded to beat the hell out of her because she was dressed like a whore, and all her siblings did that. (That’s all the families for now. They got another one, but I can’t think of the name right at this moment.)
Anyway, the separate families had their own lives of what they lived, and they had a lot of horror living that they don’t. Their parents were very vicious toward them. Their parents did not have any respect for them at all. If they messed up, they would have a dish in their face. They would have their food thrown down. They would have nothing to eat, and they would have to go out and fetch food for themselves.
Stephen, he had to go catch night crawlers to sell to be able to have food for him to eat. Camille, she had to do her horror stuff and sell herself at a bar just to make ends meet for herself.
No, I asked you for the worst parents in the world, but can you blame them how they treated their own?
* * *
Matthew kept going to the bar, eventually freeing up the gabion. They started dancing and hanging out together. He decided that he was going to sing her a song, which was a very sweet one. It’s one of the country ones. It was from Charlie Rich, “Behind Closed Doors.” He had a cigarette one time, but he did try to sing the song to her.
“Everybody, from what I hear, tells me it was really good.”
So she decided to join, even this song, the singing group, for trade. They sang every night, every weekend, up on stage 22. Then they decided that they were going to get close, so one thing led to another, and they got married. Well, the wedding was a good wedding. It was just to see the justice of the peace, but didn’t have to go too formal because they couldn’t afford too much. After they got married, well, that was when Stephen thought, Okay, the ring is on your finger, Mutt. You’re my woman now. You do as I tell you. Oh my god!
She listened to him for a long time. They wound up having way too many children. The first one she got pregnant with was from that. It was out of the “I’m free to claim that it was Matthew’s kid.” So they had their rivalry and fighting while she was carrying him. He was born.
Lo and behold, then came Jonathan, who is half Mexican and half white. This had always caused problems in Matthew’s marriage, because everybody knew that she cheated on him. Well, as Jonathan grew up, he started having a lot of props. He couldn’t walk because his legs were formed like a penguin, and they could not afford decent shoes for him, so he had to wear shoes that hurt his feet most of the time. When Mom was with him, he was carried everywhere. After he got a little older, he had to learn to walk on his own.
When they were young, Matthew always messed with the girls, but Jonathan always kept his mouth shut, not telling Mom that he was fooling around. But when he did, he always got the s—— beat out of him. She would wake him up out of sleep and beat him, then put him back to bed after a while.
Reading got in the hands of it after eleven kids. The next bunch of kids were Tom, Everett, call me, and nine months old, and they would not leave Rebecca alone for no money. They had to get in that hoe constantly. In the meantime, the baby was crying, and she just gave it some milk. It was in the front room where the heater was, and they were in the bedroom where it was cold. Well, she heard Jacob when I want damn it. It’s ease me screaming, but they would not let go of her until he was done with her. By the time he was done, after two hours, she wanted to go and check on her baby, but she found him dead. The rats ate the milk off him and bit him and gave him rat poison, which killed him. Did Stephen got me with her together have any remorse to that.
“No, just bury it. Who gives a damn?”
The next thing you know, she was pregnant with a set of twins. He tried to kill her while she was carrying the twins. She was using a washer wringer, the old-time washer wringer, to wash the clothes should she have to wring the clothes and watch him do that while he stuck her head in the water, trying to drown her. It didn’t work because he got stopped by his brother, Arellano.
He had to deal with the kids being born. They were born at the hospital on June 1, 1960. The girl who came first was named Lizz Shot. The boy was named Casey. Okay, you would think that would be a good, blessed day because the two children were born, but nope. It was just hell for Camille to double the trouble. She did not want to do anything with them. She would leave them in their playpens and would not change their clothes or their diapers or anything. She would just leave them laying there, screaming and hollering. Well, her mother got tired of the stuff happening, so her mother went and got the girl. Her mother took Lizz home, took care of her, got the rashes taken care of, and kept her clean and dry.
“I kept her for a while, and then took her back to her mother.”
While Camille told her mother, “You should have just kept her ’cause I don’t even want her.
Grandma says, “Is that the way to talk about your own children? You had them. What about Casey?”
