#1

I went to visit Aaron to talk about our relationship. I wanted to forgive him, but it might take time. I promised I would never throw his affair back in his face, but I might need to be honest about my feelings when I was hurting.

#2

I would soon find out that there were wolves lurking outside the house, waiting for the right moment to strike. They had been following us from afar, and had silently entered the house when we were sleeping.

#3

The body’s natural defense is the fight-or-flight response. It prepares us to take action, but we must remain calm and listen to get as much information as possible.

#4

The Voice told me to lie down on the floor, face down, and not to look up. I did as he said, hanging my head with my hair draped across the sides of my face. As I left the bed, two pairs of legs dressed in all black followed me right behind me.

#5

The Voice then binds my wrists and ankles with the zip ties, and leaves to get Aaron. I can hear him upstairs going through the kitchen cabinets and using a drill in the living room. The Voice returns, takes our blood pressure, and asks us our medical history.

#6

I was eventually moved to the router room, where I was told I would be questioned. The Voice told me that they had been there before, and that the router was in one of the three spare bedrooms.

#7

The Voice brings me down to the living room, and I am terrified. I hear Aaron’s voice above me, and I long for him. The Voice comes back down. We have a problem. I hold my breath in anticipation. Did something happen to Aaron.

#8

I was waiting for them to leave, but instead, they took me for forty-eight hours. They placed me in the trunk of Aaron’s car, transferred me to another trunk, and drove me for hours to a location where I would be held. I was terrified that if they took me from there, I’d never return.

#9

Eventually, the Voice asks me what obligations I have over the next few days. I tell him that the only thing I need to do is work. I hope this will persuade the invaders to leave us alone.

#10

The Voice continued to whisper in my ear, and I could hear him and another person walking around behind me. They were going to take Denise for 48 hours. I would have to pay 15,000 dollars to get her back. I was told not to go to the police.

#11

The Voice told me that he would place a portable phone charger on the kitchen counter. I would take it with me when I went to the bank, and make sure my cell phone battery was fully charged. I would then use Denise's phone to text her manager and say that she had a family emergency and would be absent for the week.

#12

I was attracted to Denise, a physical therapist who worked at the hospital, and I wanted to spend more time with her. I was torn about whether I should try to work things out with my ex-wife or move on.

#13

I was so confused and broken. I was fighting the current when I needed to head downstream. I was constantly seeing my ex, and I was afraid that someone was watching me. I called a therapist and began working on rebuilding my relationship with Denise.

#14

I wake up to my phone’s alarm going off. I need to call in sick before 7 a. m. I’m in such a drugged state that I have a hard time locating the phone. I find it on the side table next to the couch.

#15

I moved to Vallejo in 2010 and bought my house two years later. It was my first major purchase. I thought I’d found a steal, paying a fraction of its true value because it was in foreclosure. I brought the house back to life with the help of my family.

#16

I was able to get a cash advance on my credit card, but I needed instructions on how to get the money. I wrote back to report the lesser amount. I couldn’t trust these assholes to release Denise after I dropped off the money, so I decided to call my brother Ethan.

#17

I was on the phone with the police when they arrived. I had to explain that the kidnappers were watching me and Denise with a camera, and that they would kill her if I called the police. I was ashamed that this was the first time I had referred to Denise as my girlfriend.

#18

When the officers went to grab some paperwork, I quickly filled Ethan in about what had happened since we spoke, and he told me he would follow me to the station.

#19

I was taken to the police station, where I was questioned about the murder. I was told that the detectives would be in soon, and asked if I would like some water. I said yes.

#20

The police questioned me for more than an hour and a half, and I gave them my passwords to my phone, email, and bank accounts. I hoped they could use them to track down the kidnappers.

#21

After I was mugged, I went to the police station, but was stuck in a room alone. Five hours later, new detectives came to interview me. I was hoping they had news about the investigation.

#22

I was transported from the parking lot to a secluded house on a lot of land. I was anxious to get out of the trunk, but what new horror would I be met with when I did. The car crept over gravel and stopped.

#23

I was handled with care as I was helped into the bathroom. I was told that showering would remove any particles from my body that might have come from the outside world. I was also told that this would make my release clean, making it less likely that the police would trace the location.

#24

I was brought to a bedroom, and the Voice told me that while he was gone, a man named J would be watching over me. If J spoke, don't be alarmed. He sounds like a typical black man. More than likely, he won't need to talk to you; he'll just check on you occasionally.

#25

The more he speaks, the more I realize he is speaking from experience. He tells me his group gets hired to collect ransom or to scare someone into paying a debt. They have succeeded in similar missions before and are reliable in their execution. They know everything about their victims, where they work, where they hang out, and where they shop.

#26

The threats the captors made were clear. They would not hesitate to hurt me or my family if I spoke to the police. I understood. I was outnumbered by a group of intelligent, trained, and armed criminals who would not let me leave.

#27

I was with Aaron for most of a day, and he hadn’t beaten me yet, so maybe torture wasn’t their MO. I was thankful for that. We have a problem. One of us is going to have to have sex with you.

#28

I was interviewed by Detective Mustard, who was very friendly and reassuring. However, his questions became more and more hostile as I went on, and he didn’t seem to be taking any notes.

#29

The Voice can be extremely dangerous. It can throw you back into a situation, and you’ll have to defend yourself. It’s best to avoid the Voice at all costs.

#30

Mustard told me there had been no other communication about a ransom demand. If the kidnappers had stopped communicating, they must know I went to the police.
