Eric’s high school graduation ceremony was highlighted by a keynote speaker who spoke about the graduates flying like eagles. Eric had joined ROTC, and talked of a military career.

Eric was a quiet, quirky young man with deep dimples and a sideways smile. He was particularly proud of his intellect, which he displayed by taking advanced classes.

Eric’s military career ended abruptly when he was passed over for a position in the regular army. He went into the Individual Ready Reserve, and his dream of a career army officer’s life came to a screeching halt. He applied for a police officer’s job in a Fort Worth suburb called White Settlement, but was fired after eight months.

Eric had a difficult time finding work after leaving the police force. He eventually settled in Kaufman County, where he worked for the sheriff’s office. He was hired to help with the county’s only district court.

When Eric drove into Kaufman, his surroundings reminded him of his hometown, Azle. He had an interview there and was hired.

Eric began working for Judge Glen Ashworth in his courthouse offices in Kaufman. He was in charge of the judge’s schedule, worked with lawyers filing motions, and set trial dates. He was also in charge of the judge’s calendar, and managed the judge’s docket.

In 1985, Eric met and began dating a woman named Janice Gray. He gave her a gun as a gift, and when she said she didn’t want to go out with him anymore, he threatened to use the gun on her. She went with police, and Eric was never seen in Kaufman again.

Eric Williams, by the mid- nineties, had a successful career. He lacked only the right person to share his success with. One day in 1996, three years after he arrived in Kaufman, he posted on an Internet message board and a woman named Kim Johnson read it. Something about that post appealed to her.

Kim Johnson, Eric’s wife, had a good middle-class upbringing. She attended junior college, before enrolling in the prestigious Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She planned to enroll in law school, but instead dropped out of college to teach.

In 1996, Kim signed up for a free thirty-day account with Prodigy, an early Internet service. She met Eric at a restaurant that Thanksgiving, and they began dating. Kim was flighty and overly proud, but her friends at the courthouse noticed a difference in her partner.

Eric had Type 1 diabetes, and his relationship with Kim grew stronger. He began to see less of his own family, and his relationship with his sister continued to be strained.
