Sample Book Insights:
#1 I had reported from different parts of China, but this was my first time in the northeast. I could sense a connection between the Korean and Chinese cultures. The area we were in was home to millions of citizens of North Korea, one of the most isolated and repressive countries in the world.
#2 We met our guide, a Korean-Chinese man in his late thirties, at the hotel. He would be taking us to the border area where North Koreans make their way to China. We would have to be careful and discreet so as not to put any defectors at risk of deportation.
#3 Laura had always put a lot of pressure on herself, and she never stopped working. She was constantly checking her BlackBerry, even when with her family. I was constantly frustrated by her lack of attention to anything but work.
#4 Mitch was a mentor to me, and I considered him a member of my family. I had worked with him on several stories over the years, and now we were working on the Chinese–North Korean border to trafficking of North Korean women.

#1

I had reported from different parts of China, but this was my first time in the northeast. I could sense a connection between the Korean and Chinese cultures. The area we were in was home to millions of citizens of North Korea, one of the most isolated and repressive countries in the world.

#2

We met our guide, a Korean-Chinese man in his late thirties, at the hotel. He would be taking us to the border area where North Koreans make their way to China. We would have to be careful and discreet so as not to put any defectors at risk of deportation.

#3

Laura had always put a lot of pressure on herself, and she never stopped working. She was constantly checking her BlackBerry, even when with her family. I was constantly frustrated by her lack of attention to anything but work.

#4

Mitch was a mentor to me, and I considered him a member of my family. I had worked with him on several stories over the years, and now we were working on the Chinese–North Korean border to trafficking of North Korean women.

#5

The selling of women as brides is becoming more and more common in China. Because of the country’s exploding population, the government has begun limiting the number of children Chinese couples can have. However, many couples want a single child to be male.

#6

China is North Korea’s closest ally, and as a result, a thriving black market has emerged in North Korea as Korean-Chinese businesspeople take advantage of the North’s isolation.

#7

I was beginning to worry about the amount of pressure Laura was applying herself with. Her work was beginning to affect her personal life, even her health. She had been on medication for more than a year to treat her ulcers, and her last endoscopy indicated that a new ulcer had formed.

#8

We went to the Tumen River to film the crossing point between North Korea and China, where defectors escape through. We didn’t intend on staying long because we wanted to get back to Yanji to catch an afternoon flight south to Shenyang.

#9

I had set my iPod to wake me up at 4 A. M. It was 1 A. by the time I got into bed. I figured I’d plow through on little sleep until we were on our flight later that afternoon, when I could take a nap.

#10

I was invited to visit North Korea and see the border with my own eyes. I was nervous, but I knew we had to cross the border to get pictures. When I was just two steps from the Chinese side, the ice beneath my left boot broke, and I fell into the river.

#11

I was with the China Border Patrol trying to get into China. I was with Euna, a guide, and two soldiers. The soldiers tried to take us across the river, but I couldn’t walk because my foot was numb from falling into the water.

#12

I was dragged across the ice by the soldiers, and when I regained consciousness, I was in a small room with Euna. We were then escorted back outside and made to wait. The post was little more than a dirt clearing.

#13

We were taken to a border post where we were held for a ten-minute wait. We were then led away from the post, through dry grassland, toward China. I could tell the emaciated men were curious about us, but they kept their eyes averted as we passed.

#14

I was very protective of my sister, Laura, and I didn’t want her to get distracted by the boy craziness that had struck me long ago. She never would.

#15

Iain is a financial quant who has never been angry in his life. He has a gentle demeanor, and he adores his wife, Laura, who is also very calm and stoic. They married in 2004.

#16

I was taken to the bridge, and while I was made to wait outside, I thought that the North Koreans were actually letting us go. I was given a clean hat by the officer, and thought he might be trustworthy.

#17

We were taken to a military base, where we were met by three officials. They went through our possessions, and when they found money, they carefully counted it again. I suspected they wanted to make sure we didn't lose any money.

#18

We were taken to another building, where we were blindfolded and led across a courtyard. We were told that someone was coming to take us to another base. We were left alone with our belongings for a brief period, but we were still nervous.

#19

I was transferred to another facility, where I was interrogated and held for the next three nights. Euna was taken out of the car first. We’d been together all day, able to console and confide in each other. Now we were separated, and a sense of anxiety rushed over me.

#20

I was taken to a jail in China, and I was told that my parents and husband were frantic with worry. I thought about Lisa, my parents, and my husband, and the horror they must be feeling not knowing where I was or if I was even alive.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

I was woken up by the news that Laura had been abducted by North Korean border guards. I called my friend Richard Holbrooke, the U. S. special representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan, and asked him to help me get Laura back.

#2

I spoke with former U. S. vice president Al Gore, who helped me navigate the complex situation with North Korea.
