The Curly-Coated Retriever descended from the sixteenth-century English Water Spaniel and the Retrieving Setter. The Curly was first exhibited in 1860 at Birmingham. This is a multi-purpose hunting retriever developed in England. The head is longer-than-wide wedge. Its coat is a distinguishing characteristic, with its thick mass of small, tight, crisp curls, lying close to the skin. They come in black and liver colors. This is a self-confident, steadfast and proud dog.
PREFACE
Breeding better dogs and those that can win has been part of mankind’s history for a long time. In fact, it probably started when dogs began to evolve many millennia ago. Because dogs are biological mechanisms, as are humans and all other living things, they are subject to change. In genetics they refer to it as mutations. Thus it is fair to say that among the most fascinating subjects found in the world of dogs, none have been more interesting than those related to the breeding of purebred dogs that have specific traits, temperaments, colors, sizes and shapes. The more than 350 recognized breeds attest to the scope of this subject. Common to these ventures has been a wide array of authors who have offered their ideas about breeding based primarily on experience. This text is different from others in that it devotes extensive attention to experience and research which has produced new and better insights on this subject.
This book also brings together information and materials that have practical value and application to the breeders of purebred dogs. Illustrations, tables and figures have been arranged so that the reader can use the information, methods and techniques in a practical way. This effort was ten years in the making and is intended for those interested in breeding to improve specific traits of conformation, health and temperament. The style and use of non-technical language offers new, yet easy ways to understand ideas that are based primarily on research and information collected from many sources including those learned through my own breeding and research experiences.
This text looks at how technology made possible many of the new ways to improve breeding practices. To illustrate this point, we can look to the 1950’s, and the breeding of domestic animals. This was a time when genetics, and many of the new and better breeding methods was being used by the breeders of cattle, sheep, hogs and other animals. These breeding practices, combined with what had been learned from research, changed how animals would be bred. For example, before 1950, the best dairy cattle could only
