Acknowledgments
Thanks to Pam Mourouzis at Howell Book House for making Pampering Your Pooch a reality, and for her continued support as we work on a variety of books together. Thanks also to Beth Adelman, my editor, for her hard work and dedication to this project. I’d also like to thank illustrator Sara McKinley, whose drawings you’ll be seeing throughout the book.
My gratitude also goes out to all of the people at the various companies who supplied me with products to write about in this book and who provided much of the valuable information you’ll soon be reading. Many of these people are truly dedicated to enriching the lives of dogs everywhere.
On a personal note, my love and gratitude goes out to my best friend, Mark Giordani, who has helped to train Rusty (my Yorkshire Terrier), as well as to Ferras AlQaisi ( www.FerrasMusic.com ), my dear friend who enriches my life in so many ways. My close circle of lifelong best friends wouldn’t be complete, however, without acknowledging Ellen Bendremer, Sandy Bendremer, and their incredible children, Emily and Ryan.
I’d also like to acknowledge the love and support I continue to receive from my family, and congratulate my father on his recent marriage. Finally, I’d like to dedicate this book to my childhood dog, Snoopy; my coauthor on this project, Rusty ( www.MyPalRusty.com ); and to all of the pampered pooches out there who will benefit as their loving owners read this book.
As you spend your hard-earned money pampering your own dog, please remember all of the dogs who are less fortunate, including those who are homeless and who desperately need your help. Please consider supporting the amazing work done by the many reputable and hard-working animal charities and shelters throughout the country, through donations of your money and perhaps by volunteering your time.
Introduction
D ogs are our faithful companions. They provide unconditional love and affection, and are usually absolutely grateful for everything we do for them. They’re sad when we leave home without them, but we can always count on a greeting filled with enthusiasm when we return. If you’re one of the millions of people who adores their dog and considers him to be a member of the family, and you want to do absolutely everything within your power to keep your dog healthy and happy while at the same time providing him with the very best that life has to offer, you’ve picked up the right book!
If you follow the Hollywood scene, you already know that celebrities like Paris Hilton pamper their dogs with diamond-studded collars, designer outfits, and a wide range of other extravagant and fabulous items. This book will teach you how to expertly pamper your dog as well—but it won’t be cheap!
This Is Not a Dog-Training Manual!
The very first thing you need to understand about Pampering Your Pooch is that this is not a dog-training manual! There are hundreds of books, videos, and training classes available if you want to train your dog. (In fact, I definitely recommend that in addition to pampering your dog, you begin training him as early in his life as possible.)
Rather, this book is all about expressing love for your dog by pampering him. You’ll learn how to treat your dog to the best of everything life has to offer, while always keeping his health, well-being, and happiness in mind.
Just one way to pamper (not spoil) your dog is to make sure he’s eating a well-balanced and healthy diet by offering him the very highest quality, best-tasting food available. It’s not about spoiling your dog by giving him dozens of yummy supermarket-bought treats throughout the day—many of which are unhealthy or don’t provide the well-balanced daily nutrition your dog needs. After all, you wouldn’t feed a child an all-candy diet, would you? You need to strike a balance. And when you want to give your dog a treat as a reward, a show of affection, or a training tool, this book will help you choose from the most healthy and delicious treats a
