The holidays are such a magical time of year to so many people around the world. Even in the toughest of times, there is something quite special about the holidays which can lift one’s spirits. The same can be said about the love one has for their beloved pet. Pet parents around the world know how special and uplifting the love and affection a pet shows their parent is truly special and one of a kind.
In author Paula Bailey’s Peaches and Jake Celebrate Christmas, the author brings the magic of the holidays and the love of a beloved pet together in one special project. Blending original storytelling/commentary with photos of the author’s beautiful dogs, Peaches and Jake, the story focuses on the pets finding their holiday gifts, and the special experiences each have with their own Christmas toy.
There is a special warmth and homeyness to this incredible book. The way the author was able to connect readers with her own pet family while still making the book feel relatable and heartfelt was a real testament to the author’s writing style. The use of personal photos allowed the reader to experience the heartwarming moments the author shared with her beloved pets, and the artistic way the author depicted the pets’ emotions and glee at opening their Christmas presents was succinctly captured in this short yet moving read.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy a blend of photography, dog care, pet parenting, and a touch of holiday magic. As a pet owner myself, I loved how the author captured that touching and emotional moment when a pet expresses their overwhelming delight at receiving a new toy or present, and personally loved the different reactions that Jake and Peaches both had to their gifts throughout this personal narrative the author was retelling.
Heartfelt, engaging, and beautifully written, author Paula Bailey’s Peaches and Jake Celebrate Christmas is a fun and easy pet-friendly narrative that pet parents and children alike will absolutely delight in. The cozy and magical quality of both the author’s writing and the photographs will draw readers in, and the very personal connection the author has to this story allows the reader to feel the love and heart that this pet parent has for her pups.

On Christmas morning 2018, Paula Bailey awakens her two rescue dogs, Jake and Peaches. Jake sleepily follows Peaches over to the Christmas tree, where they discover that Paula has left them each a large bone to gnaw on. They find a pair of stuffed animals, a moose and a fox, in the living room. Jake eagerly chooses the moose for his own and retreats into Paula’s office to play with it, but Peaches, who never had toys as a puppy, doesn’t seem to know what to do with her toy. Before long, Jake has thoroughly disemboweled “Moosie,” though he continues to guard the cloth jealously. “Foxie,” however, remains in pristine condition because it puzzles Peaches, and Jake obediently refuses to steal it.
Based on real events but suffused with the author’s lively imagination, this charming Christmas tale is a treat for dog lovers. At moments during the story, Bailey takes readers into the dogs’ heads, playfully speculating what they might be thinking as they puzzle out the mysterious rituals of Christmas. The text is punctuated throughout by full-color photographs that depict the progress of the dogs through all stages of the morning. Tension is maintained through the subtle introduction of obstacles –a bone that Peaches has trouble eating and some conflict over the moose toy –which balances the all-pervading whimsy. The overall mood is cozy, almost as if the reader has been invited into the author’s home. A short introduction and author bio further illuminate the dogs’ personalities and their relationship to the author.

INTRODUCTION
With the holidays rapidly approaching, I thought it would be fun to share a Christmas story with you about Peaches and Jake celebrating Christmas with their toys from Santa.
If you have read my other two books, “Peaches and the 19 Cobras” and “Peaches and Jake and 19 Cobras, Oh My!”, then you are familiar with my two amazing rescue dogs, Peaches and Jake. The events of this book actually took place in 2018, when Peaches was six years old and Jake was nine, before the other two books were written.
I’m sure most of you are aware that most dogs just love stuffed toys—so much so that many times, the stuffing from the toy eventually ends up on the floor because, for one thing, the blasted squeaker the toy maker put inside the toy to get the dog’s attention just had to be found and silenced, of course! And that required biting a hole in that toy and tearing out most, if not all, of the stuffing to get to that squeaker. How such small toys can hold that much fluff is beyond me, but they sure do, and it can really make a mess!
Well, this was certainly the case with Jake, but not so much with Peaches. You’ll see from the pictures how Jake’s eyes light up when he has a toy to play with (and destroy). He thought he was in doggy heaven when he had Moosie to play with. And he loved Moosie, right down to Moosie’s final scrap of fabric!
I honestly believe that Peaches had never had a toy and that she really didn’t know what to do with Miss Fox. But she figured out that she could cuddle with her. She was always very gentle with Foxie, but she never really played with her like I thought she would.
So fix yourself a cup of hot chocolate (with a marshmallow, of course), sit down, relax, take a sip, and enjoy Peaches and Jake’s Christmas celebration.
Always
Paula Bailey
