Description

Lateral Puzzles are questions regarding a situation where the answer does not require specific knowledge to be figured out. You might call them riddles or conundrums in some cases. Part of the challenge is to NOT assume anything, which can be very difficult to do. You must think outside-the-box in all instances. Some are so obvious, you'll cringe when you hear the answer. And, they are great fun when someone knows the answer and can let you ask for clues.

INTRODUCTION
M y love of puzzles, conundrums and riddles goes back a long time. I had a friend in high school, older than me, who knew a fair number of these lateral types of puzzles. As we walked to town, he would fire one or two off and I would, occasionally, get one. I felt quite astute when I did.

I have determined the biggest problem in solving these questions is what I call - “over-think”. Here is a great example of that.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson went on a camping trip. Late at night, Holmes awoke and said, "Watson, look up and tell me what you see." Watson replied, "I see millions and millions of stars." Holmes asked, "What does that tell you?" Watson said, "Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is 3:15AM. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. Why, what does it tell you Holmes?" Holmes said, "Watson! Someone has stolen our tent."

The solving of puzzles is a common human activity. Life is filled with obstacles, problems, etc. that challenge us to “the answer” all the time. I’ll never forget when a friend of mine broke the pop-top off a can of soda and said, “Now, how am I supposed to open this?” Realizing he hadn’t thought laterally yet, I handed him a regular can opener, Oops!

It is recommended, when you go to the answer page, to scroll down the page with your palm so as to not see the next answer. The answers have been spaced out to make this quite safe to do.
As you tackle these fun problems, please keep one thing in mind: THE ANSWER IS RIGHT UNDER YOUR NOSE!!
