Along with designing, she runs a busy website from home. She teaches at her home studio, in Pietermaritzburg, KZN, and travels throughout South Africa and the rest of the world teaching embroidery and îne beadwork. She is a regular contributor to South African, British and Australian embroidery magazines and an occasional columnist for South AfricanStitchesmagazine. Introduction
In this book Di van Niekerk and Hazel Blomkamp have combined their embroi-dery skills to stitch Monique Day-Wilde’s exquisite hand drawn mandala designs fromMandala daydreams. These were re-rendered in Adobe Illustrator and slightly simplified to adapt them for embroidery stitches and techniques. Including Monique’s original coloured mandalas, together with information on the colour combinations used, means that embroiderers who wish to accept an additional challenge of first colouring and then embroidering the designs, have everything they need to create an exquisite and unique gift or project. Monique’s book on colouring techniques,Colouring knowhow, will be a handy tool for those who wish to recreate the three dimensional effects in the coloured mandalas.
The designs have been stitched with embroidery stitches, bead embroidery stitches, silk-ribbon embroidery stitches, needle-weaving stitches and needle-lace stitches. In addition to that a variety of related needlework techniques feature in the projects, including appliqué, trapunto and embellishing a printed background with hand stitching and beads.
We have put together a wide range of designs and styles. All of the projects have been categorized according to the skill level required to complete the work, with the intention of producing a book that is accessible to all embroiderers, no matter what level they are working at. It is also hoped that tutors of embroidery will find this book to be a useful teaching tool.
When we decided to put this book together, a short time line was proposed. It would not have been possible to complete it without an enthusiastic team of competent South African embroiderers. These ladies, who became known as ‘our work party’, were chosen not only for their competence but also because they are all jolly nice people. Grateful thanks are due to every single one of them:
Margie Breetzke Pat Burcell Carol Carl Alexandra Cullen Louise Grimbeek
Sandra Kloppers Karen Nell Jane Renton Hanli Smit Pat van Wyk
It is often said that artists are highly strung, sensitive and difficult to deal with. This collaboration has proved that view to be completely wrong. It has been a pleasure for all of us and we hope that you will enjoy this book as much as we have enjoyed putting it together for you.

Materials and how to use them
Fabrics
PURE COTTON
All of the projects on light backgrounds have been worked on either white or ecru medium-weight pure cotton fabric. The projects on a dark background have utilized a black version of the same fabric.
LINEN COTTON BLEND/PURE LINEN
Projects with a natural background have been worked on medium-weight linen cotton blend, colour natural.
SHWESHWE PRINTED COTTON CALICO FABRIC MATERIALS AND HOW TO USE THEM Indigo cloth, first introduced by European settlers in the 17th century, is typically used for traditional ceremonies in the
rural areas of Southern Africa. It has also become fashion-able in clothing by African designers. It is starched during the manufacturing process and needs to be put through two cycles in a washing machine before use so that the fabric will accept whatever method used to transfer the line drawings of the mandalas in this book.
MATTRESS TICKING
Originally a tightly woven cotton or linen fabric, sometimes woven with a twill weave, the subtle stripes of traditional mattress ticking has gained in popularity with interior deco-rators and crafters. This book uses a twill woven linen with a traditional green stripe.
COTTON VOILE/POPLIN
Each project lists cotton voile/poplin backing fabric. It stabi-lises the embroidery fabric and gives you a place to end off your threads. Once you have traced or transferred the design to the embroidery fabric (see pages 9–10), cut the voile to the same size. Unless otherwise advised in the project instructions, pin it to the back of the embroidery fabric and overlock or zig-zag around all four sides. Place your prepared fabric in a hoop before you start your embroidery.
hreads, ribbons & needles
When embroidering, use quality threads with colour-fast dyes, that do not break easily or develop fluff-balls while you are working with them. The threads used in this book largely fulfil these criteria and are available worldwide.
Any country which signed up to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol undertook to, amongst other things, ban certain toxic chemicals in the dyes that are used in textiles. This means
that it has become impossible to guarantee colour-fastness in any fabric or thread. Whilst many thread manufacturers still claim that their threads are colourfast, this is not strictly correct, particularly with regard to the darker reds, greens and purples. It is advisable to check all threads before use by dipping a small length into hot water then dabbing it dry on a white towel. If no colour comes out it is good to use. If colours do run, dunk the whole skein into the hot water, dabbing it dry and repeating this process until the white towel stays white.
STRANDED COTTON
Usually six-stranded, this thread comes in skeins of 8 m. It has a lustrous sheen and you can embroider with as many strands as you wish, depending on the texture you wish to achieve. It is ideal for fine work. This book uses stranded cotton from the DMC and Maxi Mouline ranges. For the projects in this book, use a size 7 or 10 embroidery needle when stitching with stranded cotton.
PERLE THREAD
This twisted thread is available in a variety of sizes and colours, with a sheen that is remarkably effective. It is easy to work with and provides alternative texture to your work. It is ideal for the weaving stitches featured and this book uses thread from the DMC range. To guard against tangling because of the twist, run it through a thread conditioner. Use a size 7 embroidery needle, a size 26 chenille or a size 26 tapestry needle when stitching with perle thread.
SILK THREAD
Made from the finest quality raw silk, the six-stranded Au Ver à Soie thread used in this book is from the de Paris range. It is smooth, soft and lustrous, adding a fine
dimension to any embroidery. You should use a size 9 or 10 embroidery needle when working with this thread.
RAJMAHAL ART. SILK
This six-stranded thread is a blend of rayon and silk. It comes in skeins of 8 m and provides a lustre normally associated with pure silk. You can embroider with as many strands as you wish, depending on the texture you wish to achieve. A size 10 embroidery needle is recommended.
FINE CORDONETTE THREAD
This book uses DMC Special Dentelles 80 for the finer needle-lace stitches in some of the projects. Similar to perle, it is a twisted thread with a light sheen and to guard against tangling because of the twist, you should run it through a thread conditioner. Use a size 7 embroidery needle or a size 26 tapestry needle when stitching with Special Dentelles.
METALLIC THREAD
Although manufactured from polyester yarn, metallic threads have the appearance of metal and are guaranteed to add an exciting dimension to your work, particularly when used in conjunction with beads. These threads shred easily so work with short pieces and re-thread often. Use thread conditioner for lubrication and protection. This book uses metallic thread from the DMC Diamant range couched down with Mettler machine embroidery thread. Use a size 7 or 8 embroidery needle or a size 22 chenille needle.
SILK RIBBON
Soft and sublime, these ribbons are made from pure silk and are available in a variety of widths. This book uses Di van Niekerk hand-painted ribbons to weave an extra dimension
