Description

More than 20 inspired quilting and sewing patterns

As a generation of mostly self-taught, creative women takes to the world of fabric, quilting and sewing are joining forces in a way that they never have before. Long-time quilters, committed to their craft for decades, are starting to experiment with a bit of home sewing or simple sewing for their grandchildren. The younger side of the sewing community is embracing the world of patchwork and quilting, a world that once seemed inaccessible or even undesirable to younger seamstresses. With Fabric & Thread seamlessly bridges the language and intimidation gap between these two crafts and delivers a unique collection of projects that appeal to sewers and quilters alike.

Featuring 20 new projects, With Fabric & Thread marries the nomenclature of both sewing and quilting to create an effortless set of instructions that anyone can follow. Plus, a special section features six patterns that can be accomplished two different ways: one using sewing techniques and one using quilting techniques. The result is two unique looks from a single pattern.

• Provides an excellent stepping-off point for sewers learning to quilt, and quilters learning to sew
• Chic projects, well-styled photos, and modern illustrations speak to this increasingly unified audience
• Good, basic, understandable instructions

If you're a quilter experimenting with sewing, or vice versa, the beautiful designs in With Fabric & Thread give you everything you need to bring these two crafts together to make unique and inspired projects.

To my Figs, big and little. I couldn’t even imagine this whole adventure without all four of you in it every day.
Acknowledgments
First I want to thank all the wonderful sewers and quilters who have added their work and expertise to the creation of the projects in this book. You all know that I literally couldn’t do it without you, nor would I want to. Working together with all of you is a blessing and a joy! Thank you for all of your work and support of Fig Tree over the years.
Cheryl, I have learned so much from you since that first Monday morning you came to sew in the studio. Your sewing expertise is a refreshing joy for me, and your life stories are something I look forward to each week. You have taught me more than you will ever know and have become our “pretend grandma” in the process!
Sherri ( www.aquiltinglife.blogspot.com ) and Valerie, your work on the quilts in this book is as amazing as all of your work always is. Both of you never cease to amaze me with your speed, accuracy, and helpful spirit whenever I have a deadline! Thank you both for your dedication and loyalty to me over the years. I so wish you both lived closer.
Diana (QuiltedGrammy@aol.com): You know this to be true because I have told you this a hundred times: My quilts are just not the same without your amazing quilting work to finish them into the beauties that they now are. Your work on each and every single quilt and quilted item in this book does not go unnoticed! I will always think of you as “my quilter”. All mine. Thank you!
A huge thank you goes out to MODA fabrics and especially to Mark, Cheryl, and Lissa for your support of all of my endeavors, fabric ideas and for your amazing marketing and business help over the years. On a practical note, I am so grateful for all of the amazing fabric that is the reason for most of the projects in this book. MODA rocks!
I also want to thank Roxane, my editor, for attending my class at the Creative Connection, hosting that first fun dinner out, and believing in the idea of this book. Even through maternity leave and dozens of sleepless nights you have been a wonderful support and help throughout the trickiest portions of making this book come together. Thank you for all your calmness, wisdom, and support!
A special thank you also to Charlotte, and anyone else on the design and editing team, who has had to put up with my questions, my scribbles, my notes, and my emails. You have turned a thousand scraps of paper and fabric into a wonderful book.

Introduction
WELCOME!
As I work on the final edits of this manuscript, I find my mind turning more and more to you, the reader. I find that I am daydreaming about who you might be and what you will find most useful and inspirational in these pages. As I wind down my journey of writing this book, you might just be starting out on yours. Certainly you are just beginning the journey of working through this particular book, and I can’t help but wonder what part it will play in your story. Try as I might to focus on the technical aspects of making sure these pages are error free, I find myself imagining what you will think of while you are reading. I wonder what your favorite projects might be, hoping that some of my favorites will be yours as well. As an author, it is a wonderful and scary journey to write down all that you think others might want to know about your process and your craft. It is truly an adventure that, although I have done many times before, stretches and teaches me new things about myself and my work each time I do it. For me, I f
