Description

Sports is filled with successful coaches, but Satch Sullinger's story offers championship-level inspiration to players, parents and coaches who care about values and winning the right way, on and off the court. In an ego-soaked era where highlights and sound bites speak to a "me first" societal mentality, Sullinger's message cuts through the din, to the core of what matters most: mastering the fundamentals of selflessness that allow us to raise our game, lift our teammates and rise to collective glory. Winning With Purpose: Raising Our Game and Lifting Our Teammates, On and Off the Court is a motivational must-read, an absorbing exploration of the power that exists in all of us to eliminate excuses, overcome adversity and achieve success in the name of greater team good. In Winning With Purpose, Satch Sullinger serves notice that character-check crunch time is upon us, that lasting victory in life can happen only when we slam-dunk selfishness and commit ourselves to our teammates. Ultimately, Sullinger's message in Winning With Purpose is simple: Get your heart and mind right, and your game will follow. Then, you'll be in prime position to rise to your potential and enjoy uncommon team success. Winning With Purpose is a crucial wakeup call to players and parents, as well.

About the Authors
FOREWORD
by Clark Kellogg
Through the game of basketball, God has granted me the privilege of meeting lots of special people over the last four decades— coaches, players, administrators, officials, parents and media. All have blessed me one way or another. Some have been pleasant acquaintances. Some have been mentors. Many have become friends. I consider Satch Sullinger a friend, kindred spirit and mentor. His example of caring and sharing is admirable and inspirational to me.
I don’t recall specifically when Satch and I first met, but I know it was over twenty years ago, and centered on basketball. I do recall, however, that I liked Satch instantly and was drawn to his “presence.” His size, demonstrative personality and constant, colorful chatter command attention. But that was only part of it.
Satch’s passion, sincerity and respect for the game of basketball were striking to me, as was his love of people, particularly kids. We share much common ground there. His knowledge of the game and dynamic way of explaining and teaching its fundamentals is direct, effective and sprinkled with humor. It is those attributes that enable Satch to connect with players and parents alike, to teach valuable life lessons through the game of basketball to anyone he meets. As a former player, high school and college coach, and father of three sons who played college basketball, his perspective on how the game should be played and taught is powerful. With three children of my own who were college athletes, also, I believe in Satch’s strategies for success on and off the court.
In Winning with Purpose , Satch pulls no punches where teamwork, discipline and doing things the right way are concerned. In candid and disarming fashion, he offers “real talk” for coaches, players and parents. Drawing from his own trials and triumphs, Satch lays out clearly the foundation for living a life of purpose, on purpose, no matter our circumstances.
Satch speaks here to the positive impact others have made in his life through playing with purpose and embraces the opportunity and obligation each of us has to make our teammates better. In this book, Satch challenges us to be accountable, humble, grateful and the best teammates we can be in life. He connects the crucial dots between our attitude and actions off the court and our ability to succeed on it. He reminds us that, while winning is a worthy aspiration, playing the game and living the right way is much more important and impactful.
Winning with Purpose is an inspirational, empowering read that offers practical principles which, if applied, will lift your game and life to a championship level!
Clark Kellogg, 2013
A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM DICK VITALE
In the game of life, just like in sports, motivation is a key ingredient to becoming a winner. If you’re not inspired, it’s tough to succeed.
Satch Sullinger is a master motivator, and the principles he has used to inspire and improve the lives of countless kids, including his three sons, are on powerful display in Winning with Purpose . Satch stands for family, building character and doing things the right way on and off the court, and his approach to getting better at the game of life and becoming the best teammates we can be represents everything I believe in.
Satch was honored as the 2010 Naismith National High School Basketball Coach of the Year, so his resume speaks for itself. He is the father of Jared Sullinger, a member of the Boston Celtics and the former Diaper Dandy of the Year at Ohio State.
We all know, and I’ve said it many times, that life is simple: If you make the right decisions, good things will happen for you. If you make th
