Many years ago, I used to visit the area around Fuengirola in Spain regularly. A
good friend had an apartment nearby, which I could borrow, and I took advanta-
ge of that opportunity. I looked forward to every visit to the city and its surroun-
ding areas.

Since then, coincidences led to not visiting the city for a long time, and it is only within the
last 4-5 years that I have started coming back, accompanied by my beautiful wife.

Many might argue that the city and its surroundings are too much influenced by 60s and
70s tourism, but fortunately, that doesn't change the fact that the climate, the food, the pe-
ople, and the city itself still have their own unique Mediterranean charm, for those who
wish to see it.

So, what is Fuengirola and its surroundings like today? I
have set out to find out, and I have gathered my own conclu-
sions and recommendations in this short e-book, which
hopefully can inspire you and your loved ones to visit Fuen-
girola and its surroundings. Who knows? But that is my
hope.

In this e-book, I have mentioned a number of restaurants,
sights, shops, and more. These are all places that I personally
enjoy and have visited several times. Therefore, it is im-
portant for me to emphasize that none of these places have
asked to be mentioned in this book, nor have I received
anything for mentioning them. The various places are simply
included because I like them.

And a practical note: For the places mentioned, I have provi-
ded links. Click on the link, and a map with facts and the location will open on your pho-
ne, tablet or computer, making it easy for you to find the place. Convenient, isn't it?

Enjoy the e-book!

F
acts about Fuengirola
Fuengirola is a city and municipality in the province of Málaga, in the region of
Andalusia in southern Spain. The city lies on the Costa del Sol, and has a popula-
tion of about 80,000.
Fuengirola is a popular holiday destination and is known for its long sandy beaches, its
nightlife and its rich cultural life.
The city has a long history and has been inhabited by people since the Bronze Age. In the
13th century, the city was conquered by the Christians and later became an important tra-
ding city. In the 20th century, Fuengirola became a popular tourist destination, and the city
has since grown significantly.
Today, Fuengirola is a modern city with a wide range of hotels, restaurants, shops and
bars. The city also has a rich cultural life and is a popular destination for people of all ages.
And by the way - you can find the tourist information right on the beach . It couldn’t be ea-
sier.
For most of us, it is quite simple: The weather
in Fuengirola all year round is better than the
weather where we live!
Fuengirola and the surrounding area has a ty-
pical Mediterranean climate. This means that
there are mild winters and warm summers.
The average temperature in January is around
15°C, and in July it is around 28°C. There is an
annual rainfall of around 600 millimetres, and
there are around 300 sunny days per year.
I think the best time to visit Fuengirola is in
spring (March-May) or autumn (September-
November). In these months, the weather is
warm and sunny, but not too hot. There are
also fewer visitors in these months, so you can
enjoy the city and the beaches in peace and
quiet.
T
he journey to Fuengirola
Almost all the major European airlines fly to Malaga, including most low-cost
airlines. So finding flights to Malaga is quite easy.
Of course, you can also buy a complete package tour with flight, hotel and pos-
sibly car hire, but with the advent of digital platforms, it has become much easier to put
together your trip to Southern Spain and the Fuengirola area yourself.
Malaga Airport - train or taxi?
I have visited a number of airports around Europe, and I have two favorites when it comes
to central location, serving a large area and a large number of travelers. Every time, Nice
Airport and not surprisingly - Malaga Airport - end up as my two favorites.
In a way, the two airports and their locations are very similar, but one of the points where
Malaga Airport wins is with its easy access to the train, which runs from Malaga Center
with a stop at the airport and then continues all the way to Fuengirola, stopping along the
way. It couldn't be easier to get to the most important holiday destinations along the Spa-
nish Costa del Sol! And the train runs every 20 minutes.
But it can be a bit difficult to find the train station at the airport: You have to go out of the
airport building to the parking lot in front. And here is the train station . You buy your ti-
cket at a ticket machine at the station, where you choose your destination on the screen
and pay with either a credit card or cash. The machine then prints your tickets.
But if you prefer a taxi, there are plenty of them. There are traditional taxis, but also the
new players Uber and Bolt are available, if you are used to using them. So there is enough
to choose from.
Car rental
All international car rental companies are present at the airport, but there are also a num-
ber of local players. They are located inside the airport.
If you know when and how long you need to use a car, you can conveniently book the car
from home. But several of the car rental companies also have offices in Fuengirola itself, so
you can contact them if you need a car during your trip. However, be aware that there is
high demand in the high season over the summer, when many people visit Southern
Spain.
I have chosen to collect my car rental with one company that I am happy with and which
offers a number of advantages, such as low self-insurance, no extra payment for kilome-
ters traveled, etc.
And here you get a little tip: Car rental companies often wants to sell you extra insurance
for the car. But check your credit card before you book. Many international credit cards
have built-in insurance that covers the same situations as car rental companies would like
to sell you coverage for. There is no reason to pay twice.
