Children nowadays are tyrants. They contradict their parents, gobble their food and tyrannise their teachers.

INTRODUCTION

W elcome to Fun for Kids in Singapore ! This is the latest guide to everything children, predominantly between the ages of 3 and 18, can do or enjoy in Singapore. It is written for all families, whether you are new to Singapore or if you ve been here for a number of years.
Things don t stand still in Singapore - it is a place of great change and there are always new venues being constructed, classes opening up and the old making way for the new. As a result, it is wise to check websites, keep a lookout for events in newspapers and periodicals and call ahead if you are planning something special. Everything in this book was correct at the time of going to press but obviously some information (such as prices) should be taken only as a guide. That said, Fun for Kids in Singapore is a comprehensive guide about where to go, what is available and how to find out more about just about anything that may occupy or entertain your children. Have fun with your children in Singapore!
WHERE IS IT?
Publications
The Singapore Street Directory (published by Mighty Minds) at $12.90 is a good investment. It is a useful aid for any taxi journeys you may take, especially to any of the smaller streets and roads. While many taxi drivers do have their own directory at hand, a number don t so I usually make a rough sketch of my destination in preparation for such situations.

GETTING AROUND
Publications
Look out for the annual TransitLink Guide (published by Transit Link Pte Ltd) at $2.00. It is available at newsagents, some bookstores and MRT customer service counters. Inside you ll find all you need to know about how to use the bus, LRT and MRT services. It s an essential guide for anyone who uses public transport.

Website
This eGuide provides a convenient one-stop information guide on point-to-point bus and train services.

Buses
More than 290 bus services cover all parts of Singapore, providing an inexpensive, mainly air-conditioned and relatively convenient means of transport. However, bus journeys can take a long time during peak hours and for parents with strollers, be prepared to have a child in one arm and the buggy in the other. Buses do not have designated baggage space so keep bags to a minimum.
Fares range from $0.60 to $1.33 (ez-link card) and $0.80 to $1.50 (cash) for non air-conditioned buses and $0.65 to $1.58 (ez-link card) and $0.90 to $1.80 (cash) for air-conditioned buses. Children up to 0.9 metres in height travel free (if they are with an adult). Concessionary fares are also available for those between 0.9 and 1.2 metres without a concessionary card. For those above 1.2 metres, concessionary fares are given on production of a Student Identification Pass.
Regular free shuttle buses run on weekends and public holidays on 3 routes: Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station to Chinatown, Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station to Little India and Outram Park MRT Station to Chinatown.
Web: www.sbstransit.com.sg / www.smrt.com.sg/buses.html / www.tibs.com.sg
Note: As drivers do not carry money, make sure that you have the exact fare in small change if you are not using an ez-link card.
MRT
The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) provides a frequent, clean and efficient rail network system that covers the whole of Singapore. There are 3 main lines running North-South, North-East and East-West (the Circle Line is scheduled to open in 2010). Train intervals are between 3 and 8 minutes from 5.30 a.m. to 12.30 a.m. Fares range from $0.40 (child) to $3. Be prepared to stand during peak periods.
Web: www.smrt.com.sg
LRT
The Light Rail Transit (LRT) system provides 3 feeder services to the MRT network. Each of the 3 lines serves an HDB public housing estate. Services operate from about 5.30 a.m. and usually end before 1 a.m. daily, with frequencies of approximately 5 minutes.

Ez-link Card
The stored value ez-link card offers the convenience of travelling on the MRT, LRT and by bus without having to pay cash for every trip. Cards can be bought at any TransitLink Ticket Office for $15 (includes a deposit and a stored value). Special cards are available for children. Cards can be topped up in value by paying cash at any TransitLink counter. Alternatively, you can use the GIRO-Link (if you have a DBS/POSB account) or Auto Credit Card facilities to top up. If you lose your GIRO ez-link card, you can invalidate it by calling the TransitLink Hotline (see below ). To use the card, tap it on the faregate upon entry to your preferred mode of transport and tap it again when you
