ABOUT THIS BOOK
The Annual Disability Statistics of 2018 report published by the U.S. Census Bureau states that among 20 million working-age people, about 7.5 million had jobs. About 37 percent of U.S. civilians with disabilities aged 18 to 64 years were employed compared to 77.2 percent of the U.S. civilians not classified as disabled who had a job. It was noted that 29 out of the 50 states in the country were awarded job gains among the communities with disabilities. In terms of disability employment among the U.S. states, North Dakota leads at 56.3 percent.
Disability Rights, Benefits, and Support Services Sourcebook, First Edition provides information about the different types of disability and their impact on individuals and society. It also outlines the importance of including people who have limitations and provides information on the barriers to participation. It also explains disability rights and laws and talks about the rights that people with disabilities have to education, housing, employment, voting, access to medical care, and transportation. Disability benefits include Social Security disability insurance, tax exemptions, coverage options, and compensation. Information about the means by which people with disabilities can be financially independent, including benefits for housing and opportunities for employment, and how assistive technology helps people with disabilities recover from injuries and move on with daily life, along with a list of government and private organizations that provide services for people with disabilities is included.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
This book is divided into parts and chapters. Parts focus on broad areas of interest. Chapters are devoted to single topics within a part.
Part 1: Understanding Disabilities defines disability as any condition of the mind or body that results in challenges in everyday life to people with such constraints. It illustrates the different types of disability and their impact on individuals and society. It also summarizes the importance of including people who have limitations and lists the common barriers to participation experienced by people with disabilities.
Part 2: Disability Rights talks about the disability rights movement and the Americans with Disabilities Act that opened venues to people with disabilities. It explains disability rights laws and talks about the rights that people with disabilities have in regards to education, housing, employment, and voting, along with access to medical care and examination rooms.
Part 3: Disability Benefits focuses on benefits that are due to people with disabilities. It begins with a planner and offers guidance on benefits for adults and children. It discusses Social Security disability insurance, tax exemptions, coverage options, and compensation.
Part 4: Support Services for People with Disabilities provides information about the means by which people with disabilities can be financially independent, including benefits for housing and opportunities for employment. It discusses how assistive technology helps people with disabilities recover from injuries and move on with daily life.
Part 5: Additional Resources lists the government and private organizations that provide services for people with disabilities.
