Insights from Chapter 1

#1

We’ve settled for a life by default rather than by design. We’re distracted from our most important work, and we don’t have time to think because we’ve given up on a life of meaning.

#2

The modern world is full of hacks that steal our time and attention. Our brains can only handle one cognitive activity at a time, and multitasking decreases our productivity by up to 40 percent.

#3

The Altered States Economy is a term used to describe the way we use various sources to shift our state of mind. It represents four trillion dollars. We’re choosing to get hacked, and we’re paying the price for it.

#4

Unhappiness is the by-product of getting hacked and not implementing your ideas. When you know your daily goals and make progress toward them, you feel good. But when you’re hacked, you experience mental and emotional anguish.

#5

Abracadabra is a word that originated in Hebrew, and it means I create as I speak. It has been passed on through generations for several thousand years. It is a word that means I want to make something happen, so I say abracadabra.

#6

We tell stories to help us process our place in the world. We spend exorbitant amounts of time and energy trying to convince ourselves why something won’t work for us. We waste energy and emotion by betting against our desires.

#7

To change your story, use the words up until now to replace the old story you’ve been telling yourself. By doing this, you give yourself permission to create a new future.

#8

The past is the source of many of our problems. It is important to be aware of this and make sure we are not repeating the same mistakes. Write out your new story, instead of focusing on what you don’t have. Don’t write in the future tense – I will have or I will be.
