Foreword
Employee engagement leading to a motivated, productive and stable workforce is the ‘holy grail’. In Asia, talent acquisition is the biggest challenge for every company and, as a consequence, employee retention becomes critical. In multi-cultural environments, engagement becomes an even greater challenge as the criteria for motivating different cultures is not consistent. Finding a single unifying concept under which you can engage across different employee groups can be exasperating. As a business we looked at a number of potential approaches but found that they were often strongly aligned with the Western culture in which they were developed and didn’t necessarily translate into our environment. The concepts we introduced at ConnectedGroup via the ALIVE framework have taken on a life of their own, assuming the ‘BOOM!’ brand and being driven from within the business as opposed to pushed from the top down. It has been a highly gratifying experience as a leader to see people naturally assume accountability and responsibility. Not everything we tried in the spirit of ‘BOOM!’ has worked or appealed to all parties and, sometimes, maintaining momentum is a challenge.
