Preface
One month at a stable that offered therapeutic riding for the disabled changed my life back in 2002. Since then I have done everything to learn more about these wonderful beings called horses. Their incredible sensitivity – despite their few hundred kilos – fascinated me. Exactly this characteristic makes the horse such a valuable teacher for people.
This book came about over several years based on my observations and experience when working with horses and people. I have found that meaningful relationships, whether between people, people and animals, or the relationship to oneself, will include these four elements – communication, respect, trust and leadership.
In relationship to others, clear and open communication must be established, mutual respect and trust must be developed and clarity around leadership must be created. The quality of the relationship to others is largely dependent on the quality of the relationship we have to ourselves. Only when we respect and trust ourselves are we able to integrate these aspects into relationships with others. Similarly, how we lead our own lives also provides valuable insights about how we lead other people.
Thus the stories are grouped into these four elements – communication, respect, trust and leadership – and contain anecdotes to serve as little reminders for daily life. They will provide you with new perspectives on these important topics, both for your personal and professional life.
Thank You
A big thank you goes out to my dear friend Ursula Hunkeler, who patiently read through the text and looked at pictures over and over again until everything fit together. A big thank also goes out to my good friend Judith Matter, my godfather Hans Sauter and my family that has supported in following my own path in life. Naturally, I am very grateful for all the invaluable lessons I have learned from the horses that I have met and worked with. An especially deep thank you goes out to my first horse Hummer (Black Diamond), who continues to show me the depth and potential of a horse-human relationship. I know there is still so much that I will be able to experience through and with him.
As I attended one of the workshops with the wild horses in Bosnia-Herzegovina, it was clear that those pictures would be ideal to compliment the stories in this book.
The pictures of the wild horses are there to serve as a reminder of what it means to be free and in alignment with your true nature. May this book serve as an inspiration for you to think about your own life and make new choices to reflect your true potential, both in your personal and professional life.
“Both horses and people seek the company of those in whose presence they feel safe and respected.”
COMMUNICATION
Making Contact
What is your primary intention when you first get in touch with someone? Is it to create a dialogue or because you want something from them?
How do you approach your horse when it is out in the pasture or in its box? Do you simply walk up to the horse, put the halter on and lead it to the grooming area? Or do you first observe the horse, wait until it notices you, approach it in a mindful manner, and then put on the halter?
Horses that tend to be used or dominated by people have a look of resignation in their eyes.
