Description

What is my deepest fear? In every sense of the word, Nicole is successful. She has a thriving career, a loving husband, and beautiful children. For Nicole, though, a constant voice in the back of her mind tells her that all these things are not good enough, that she is not good enough. In this leadership parable, follow Nicole’s inner conflict and struggles as she meets with the two people she trusts the most, Dr. Jonas Nolan and his wife, Sophia. With the loving guidance and coaching by the Nolans, ask yourself as Nicole did, “What is my deepest fear? What is holding me back from my sweet spot of greatness?” Like Nicole, are you are at a point in your life where your deepest fear is now being exposed and brought to light? Is it time for you to unlock the buried treasure within you? Is it time for you to journey into your destiny and assignment that only you were born to accomplish? Is it time to be liberated from fear? Unlocking Buried Treasure: Keys to Master Your Greatest Fear not only shows how to identify the fears that are holding you back but also gives you accessible and tangible strategies and keys to overcome those fears so you can reach your greatest potential, both personally and professionally. This is the second in the Papa’s Legacy Leadership parable series.

Dedication
This book is for those who are struggling and, at times, feeling the pressure of their fears. There is help, there is hope, and there are keys to unlocking the buried treasure within. I’m so thankful for the gift of story and the ability to share with those who are on the cusp of facing their greatest fears.
To my family, my wife, Pam , daughters, Sara , Jessica , and Christina , my son-in-loves, Joe , Brian , and Tommie , and especially my grandchildren: Jonas Michael , Nolan Joseph, Lucy Kay, Sophia Marie Gloria, Genevieve Grace, and Penelope Rose , you have been the inspiration for this book, especially our bedtime stories during our family vacations on Hilton Head Island. This is Papa’s legacy to you. I pray that as you mature, you, too, will master your thinking and live powerfully in your sweet spot of greatness. You are the seeds, you are my garden, and your generation and succeeding generations need the treasure of your unique potential.
To the readers, my hope is that this book will not just be information to think about, but it will touch your heart and be used to stimulate, inspire, and transform.
As always, to my Lord and King Jesus Christ, for His glory and honor!

About the Author

Acknowledgments
I get excited to hear a good story, I enjoy reading a good story, but I love to tell a good story. This book is a combination of all three. It is never formed alone. I’d like to acknowledge a few of the people and relationships that have influenced the story you are now reading.
My wife, Pam, thank you for always believing in me, encouraging me, and creating a home where I can excel at what I do best and tap into my “sweet spot” of greatness. Thank you for helping me with my thoughts and guiding me in the process to find the best expression of words that reflect the heart of this work. I love my life with you, and I am blessed to be your husband.
To our daughters Sara, Jessica, and Christina, the beginning of my story telling started by telling you bedtime stories from the time that you were very young. I loved and cherished those times and the adventures we created together.
To our grandchildren, Jonas, Nolan, Lucy, Sophia, Evie, and Penny, that tradition that started with your mommies has continued with each of you especially during our bedtime stories at Hilton Head Island. The foundation of this book is found in the story told in Chapter 2, “The Memory”. That storyline was developed with all of your wonderful thoughts and ideas.
A special thank you to our team at FutureNow Consulting: Pam, Christina, and Sara. What you do, how you do it, and how you serve our clients gives me the opportunity, motiva- tion, and passion to pursue writing books like this.
To Christina Shimrock, thank you for editorial skills and work on the initial manuscript and drafts. Your ability, talent, and advice have been greatly appreciated.
Thank you to the editorial team at Outskirts Press. Your professional services and customer service are outstanding, and I know you have made this book better as a result.

Prologue
“I feel terrible…I just hate this feeling…It’s going to be another one of those days. I can’t….” Nicole caught herself as the old tapes automatically looped in her brain. She looked at the clock on her nightstand and drew the strength to drag herself out of bed to start another day.
Under the shower, Nicole was being nagged by her own inner voice. “You decided early on, at age three, that working hard, pleasing, cleaning up, being a ‘good’ girl was the only way to feel good about yourself. These were the ways you used to compensate for all the ‘not good enough’ messages that were being thrown at you. If you could work hard enough and be good enough, it would justify your existence.”
Nicole felt the water bead on her face. “I am worthy. Look at all I have accomplished: school, marriage, children, being a successful reporter, and now a published author. Why I am feeling so awful? I wish I had met Dr. Jonas Nolan earlier. I thought these feelings were gone, but they are so intense that I feel like a heavy weight is being pressed down on my chest.”
Nicole recalled the day she met and interviewed Jonas Nolan and heard his vulnerable words describing his experience with a life-changing choice: “My defining moment happened at a conference two decades ago, but that moment was an epiphany. It was then that I realized my life’s true purpose and the legacy I was destined to leave. Until that time I had been struggling internally, but I wasn’t fully aware of why. That moment in time brought me to a life-changing choice.”
Nicole remembered how those words immediately connected to her own struggle with the same sense of internal conflict. Something touched her deeply when he looked right into her eyes and with deep conviction stated, “I needed to be who I was really meant to be.”
She had never heard anyone speak quite like that, and she knew right then that it was more than just an interview.
Nicole again put her face into the warm flow of water from the shower, and the quote from A Return to Love by Marianne Williamson came to mind.
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and famous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. You playing a small part doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are born to magnify the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
Nicole wondered, “Could it be my deepest fear is now being exposed and being brought to light? Is it now time for me to unleash the true leader within me? Is it time to journey into my destiny and assignment for being born? Is it time to be liberated from my real fear?”
Nicole knew she needed to act and deal with the deep-seated fears and emotions that were controlling and haunting her. She turned off the shower and hurriedly dried herself off and quickly dressed. Finding her cell phone, she thumbed through her contacts and found the number. “Hello, Sophia, could you and Jonas meet with me ASAP? I have to talk to both of you. It is URGENT!”

The Coffee Shop
“N icole, Nicole, Nicole Demas!” The voice jarred Nicole out of her before-a-cup-of-coffee coma.
Nicole was waiting in line at her favorite coffee shop. The aroma of fresh-brewed coffee and warm pastries had always brought her a feeling of contentment and comfort. The voice from the end of the line startled her but also snapped her to the reality of whom she was meeting that morning. “Good morning, Sophia,” she told her friend. “I’ll get your coffee if you find us a table.” From the front of the long line Nicole smiled as she spoke.
It had been nearly four years since her interview with Dr. Jonas Nolan. In her mind that encounter was not only life changing, but also the beginning of a deep friendship with the Nolan family. Jonas was a man of integrity and his character was above reproach, in contrast to the business leaders, politicians, and activists she had interviewed over the years. Physically he was tall and well built. His dark hair had grayed and his hairline was receding, but even at his age, his presence commanded attention. There was a twinkle in his hazel eyes, however, and he had a smile that was disarming and put people at ease. Jonas and Sophia had been more than friends; they had become family to her.
Nicole had grown up in a home with a lack of bonding with either her mother or father. In fact, her father and mother were emotionally and verbally abusive to her and her siblings. Despite the deep parental scars, she became successful in her career as a reporter and a published author. The effects of her great pain had poured over into all of her relationships, though. She de
