Preface
In the past few years, Cloud computing has recently emerged as one of the buzzwords in the IT industry. Various IT vendors are providing storage, infrastructure and application-based hosting services to end users in several countries and even offering Service-level Agreements (SLA)-backed performance and uptime promises with regard to their services. Cloud Computing has become a great solution for providing highly dynamic, on-demand and scalable computing infrastructure for many applications.
The book “Handbook of Cloud Computing” is an edited book- carefully drafted by 19 authors highly expert in area of cloud computing. The scope of this book includes comprehensive coverage to all aspects of cloud computing-basic terminologies, cloud models, cloud security, resource allocation, simulators and mobile cloud computing.
The book comprises of 11 chapters. The first five chapters i.e. Chapter 1 to Chapter 5 highlights basic terminologies and elaborates the concepts regarding Virtualization, Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and gives in-depth detail of various service providers available in market along with comprehensive coverage of their provided services.
Chapter 6 enlightens Data in the cloud. Chapter 7 covers the most sensitive issue surrounding cloud computing i.e. Cloud Security. Considering the viewpoint of researchers working in this area, and to motivate more people to come and propose novel things in this area, the concept of cloud computing simulators is mentioned in chapter 8. Simulator is regarded as useful tool to model the system behavior in virtualized manner. Chapter 8 enlists all popular cloud simulators which assists researchers to do research and propose and solve problems surrounding cloud computing.
Chapter 9 highlights various other cloud computing service models. Chapter 10 discusses another significant concept connected to cloud computing i.e. Resource allocation and also covers all algorithms and even performance comparison.
And considering the rapid evolution and high adaptability of cloud computing, the concept of Mobile cloud computing is mentioned in Chapter 11 .
Considering the dynamic growth of cloud computing technologies, platforms and services, the book “Handbook of Cloud Computing” will be definitive one-stop resource for all people working in this area. The book is intended for all audiences ranging from researchers, academicians, scientists, engineers, developers, practitioners and students of Graduate and Master degrees. The book has a huge potential to be adapted as textbook for illustrating various courses of cloud computing.
Foreword
Almost everyone living in the modern era of technology and using smart phones, computers and portable technology gadgets is making use of Cloud Computing technology one way or another, and most of us make use of cloud, to perform high computational tasks in engineering, setting up online and powerful infrastructure for our respective organizations, playing online games and just storing documents and photos safely to access anywhere and everywhere. So, various questions arise in our minds like: What exactly is cloud? How Cloud Computing works? Who are the Organizations and Service providers behind this magical world of Cloud Computing? Why is cloud computing so cost-effective? What infrastructure and other things are driving forces behind cloud computing? And above all, Is the cloud computing secure? This book answers all these questions and gives you complete guide towards basic terminologies of cloud, Virtualization, Cloud Computing Models, Cloud Security, Simulation Tools, Resource allocation as well as Mobile Cloud Computing.
The text in this book is written in simple and understandable way and straight to the point, drawing from hundreds to thousands of sources. The material acquired from various sources is well organized and presented in simple terminology, context and organization to make the readers understand the concepts of cloud computing from ground level to advanced industry ready concepts.
The book in an all can be considered as “One-Stop Comprehensive Guide” to Cloud computing. Every chapter in this book covers latest information and language highly simple even for newbie to understand. The book has great technical depth, addressing both theory and practical concepts as well as issues. The book contains many important diagrams which give clear and comprehensive approach to the readers to have thorough understanding of the information in the text.
Cloud computing has high end sophisticated and complex infrastructure that is designed, deployed and secured by IT organizations to provide 100% uptime to the users and accessibility anywhere from any part of the world with just any device connected to the Internet.
