Foreword
Congratulations on picking up this book. The fact that you are reading this indicates that you are interested in learning more about raising children, and this is certainly an important first step towards successful parenthood.
Bringing up a child is challenging, yet fun and exciting. The different phases of childhood present different needs which need to be dealt with using different strategies. The learning process should start even before the baby is born. Preparation is important to give you a head start on the road to parenthood. Important aspects of infant and child care, such as cultivating good sleep habits and feeding routines, can have a significant impact on the subsequent life of your child.
Illnesses in early childhood can be stressful, especially for new parents. Being informed enables you to look out for signs and symptoms that may pose serious problems. Preventive health care through vaccination is vital and with the increasing numbers and varieties of vaccines available today, having a clear understanding and appreciation of the roles (and also adverse effects) of each vaccine is important for every parent.
Simple routines such as feeding and weaning to toilet training and disciplining the child can vary widely across cultures. Traditional and folklore beliefs also play a significant part in each family and can sometimes be a source of conflict between generations. Having reliable references based on good clinical and scientific evidence, which you will find in this book, would certainly be helpful in these situations.
The increasingly competitive education system has significantly increased the demands on the school-going child. Parents often add to the pressure with the good intention of helping the child maximise his potential. What parents need to know are the ways to encourage, nurture and stimulate their child and to focus on identifying talent without overwhelming him. At the same time, parents should be sensitive to detect the subtle signs of learning and behavioural disorders and seek appropriate attention if need be.
Understanding and relating to your child through the growing years requires you to appreciate the social and emotional developmental milestones and to assist your child in developing his moral values and beliefs. Most important of all, you will have to provide a stable and loving home environment for your child.
The challenging process of raising a child never actually ends even though the relationship between you and your child will evolve through the years. But you will soon discover that parenthood is the most rewarding and fascinating experience of your life.

If your answer is yes to either question, you must be eagerly anticipating the day you will hold your precious little one in your arms. Yet, once in a while, you may also wonder if you will ever be up to the task. You are not alone.
Having a child will definitely change lives-yours, your spouse s and your family members . It has been said that a baby will make love stronger, days shorter, nights longer, bankroll smaller, home happier, clothes shabbier, the past forgotten and the future worth living for.
