This is a book about change. There are at least as many reasons for the conflicts and confusion in today’s living as there are people. While some of these reasons may be found here, the focus of this book is on the process of change and how to maximize the benefits of it. You may realize that either you are caught in the midst of changing opinions or consciously want to make a change. Any form of change may include emotionally influenced thinking and behavior. This is an emotional guidebook that offers help in identifying, clarifying and utilizing your emotions to effect a positive change.
You can look up the chapter on the particular emotion you are feeling and find help in recentering and returning yourself to a position of authority over it. Using the formula for change, along with the insights and techniques offered, you can create new beliefs about yourself and your life which will empower you and transform your self image from limited to unlimited. Reorienting ourselves to our source of power, to our true state of being by accepting our thoughts and feelings about ourselves and each other, is to allow ourselves to believe once more in our dreams and ideals. Healing the stage of survivorship, we are restored to creator-hood.
You are the center of your reality, constantly creating your experience with the strongest of your thoughts and feelings that make up the foundation of your beliefs. There is within you a source and it is always a source of renewal, recovery and power. It may be blocked by your emotions. Your reactions to your experiences in life can create a sense of separation from your source of power. In time, this sense of separation can cause you to forget or stop believing in your connection to power, and in yourself as your greatest access to it.
Unpleasant or life-threatening, pleasant or life-prolonging, changes are a part of life. You have the power to change your position from being affected by them to one of affecting them in a positive way, a way that allows you to enrich your living experience and participate in the unfoldment of consciousness for us all.
MORE AIR IN THE COCOON
There are many ways to look at the process of change. Any way that assists the development of your ability to consciously take part and create change in you and your life is a good way. One theory about the process of change is that it takes place in stages.
I use the metamorphosis of the butterfly as an analogy because its stages are so vividly manifest. It appears that everyone is in some form or stage of change in life. If you can honestly assess which stage of change you are in at present, you can move more easily into the next stage. Looking at the butterfly, we see that there are four stages of developmental change: the larva, the caterpillar, the cocoon and the butterfly. Let us look more closely at each stage and see the parallels.
The larva stage is symbolic of the state of a newborn idea in our mind. Newly conceived, we do not wish to bring our “newborn” outdoors and expose it to the elements of weather and environment. Bound by many elements of restriction and opposition, the development of your new idea seems slow. So many of our ideas remain ideas only because they are pushed to the recesses of our mind while external events demand our attention. Still, one new idea may be strong enough to grow, feeding on our experiences.
Onto the next stage. The idea has now grown into a thought form that can move on its own. The “caterpillar” has legs. This means the original idea has survived the storms of emotion and opinion within you, and has been fed by those experiences that are in relation to it. Now the idea is moving and combining with your feelings while you go about your daily life. You may be unconscious of its gathering information from your curiosity, from questions of which you may not know why you want to know the answers, only that you do want to know. You were feeding this idea of yours all along. It made you feel good. It caused hope and enthusiasm to stir within you. When ideas (thought forms) combine with feelings, they become beliefs. Now, you have a belief about your desire. Whatever you do, whether it is in your dreams or your waking consciousness, your actions are being inspired by the belief that someday you are going to have, do or be what you desire.
Again, consider the newborn child. Would you expect that infant to travel through all kinds of terrain and climate without food, rest and protection? Experience teaches that when you share your dream with those that are unhappy with themselves, you are subjecting your newborn belief to criticism, ridicule or direct opposition. You are exposing your belief to the collective beliefs in lack and limitation. The people most unhappy with themselves are too busy finding fault with other people and things to look for new ways to improve their own existence. People who are looking for someone else to rescue, fix or support them have the most trouble accepting that power lies within themselves. There are times when we are all like this, especially when we are young.
So when you present a new and different belief, they will react according to their conditioned beliefs. One of these beliefs is that they need the security of believing the same about you and everyone else in their personal reality. This insecurity, caused by a change, may take the form of ridicule, open or disguised jealousy and at times, even anger, depending upon the degree of threat. Your adventure into the realm of the unknown potential within you weakens their hold on familiarity and causes them to face their fear of change. Change represents insecurity to us all at times. The greater the aspiration, the greater the change and its influence during your changing process. So, it is wise not to share your belief in great detail until it has grown strong enough to withstand the forces of opposition.
It is this caterpillar stage of continuously feeding upon information, knowledge and experience of emotion which strengthens you to make a definite decision to change. Now you feel ready to do whatever is necessary to make that change. Like the caterpillar that has chosen which plant to climb and make as its base of operations for its transformation, you have chosen your course of change. You are no longer content with the nature of your present reality. You have found some new source of inspiration, information and support for your changing process. This may take the form of a book, a counselor, class or group that helps to shift the focus from the external circumstance to the internal processes.
Now you are entering the cocoon stage. In the cocoon stage you are in the process of learning, absorbing, assimilating, developing new (wings) beliefs, new experiences, new aspects of your consciousness and being. While we recognize the value and necessity of each stage, it is this magical cocoon stage that holds most of the focus of this book. It is magical because from the outside the cocoon appears dull colored and lifeless, while on the inside the most incredible change is taking place that will enable a creature barely able to crawl, to fly! By diminishing external activities, by disciplining yourself with love and patience in order to gather information, cultivate wisdom, renew energy and strengthen your power, you can create the transformation of your being and your life. At times, this cocoon stage may feel as though life has stagnated, because you’ve had to slow down, spend more time alone, quietly researching your goal. This appearance may choke your sense of hope, your belief in your dream.
Air is a symbol for intellect, so when I use the term, “More Air in the Cocoon,” I am talking about the intellectual insights and perspectives offered here. They are intended to assist the emotional processes and together stimulate the spiritual development which ultimately sustains and expands further upon the change taking place. These perspectives will help you breathe and broaden your vision. A positive change nourishes the growth of faith in yourself. Faith is not given. It can only be realized as being always within you. Once realized, it grows. It can never be taken from you, though you always have the free will to let it go.
