COVER STORY : WINNER – ROHAN DENNIS - 2015 , AUSTRALIA ’ S ‘ TOUR DOWN UNDER ’
“ Jody, Rohan ’ s picture is on the front page of the Sunday Mail, he ’ s won the Tour Down Under,” I excitedly squealed down the phone to his Year 12 high school teacher, Jody Macri, on the Sunday January 25 th 2015.
She and I were so excited because Rohan was in her class and while he was one of her favourite students, he wasn ’ t at all academic and had no idea like most of his classmates, what he was going to do in the following year, once his final exams were over.
I was fortunate to know Jody as she was one of my Australian Executive Women ’ s Network members, and a real estate client. I had helped her buy an investment property and was managing the Christies Beach house for her.
In 2006 Jody, or ‘ Miss M ’ as her students called her, thought of me as her mentor and probably for this reason, she kindly allowed me to introduce my teaching method to her Year 12 boys, at Blackfriars College in Adelaide, South Australia.
Thousands of students know and love ‘ Miss M ’ and I want to publicly thank Jody for her courage and commitment not only to her students, throughout her lifetime, but for trusting and believing in me, and allowing me to work with her and her Year 12 boys, because the results were amazing.
I apologise to all the high school teachers and university lecturers who contacted me when I first released my ‘ How to Ask for What You Want and GET IT! ’ book in 1994 asking me to write a textbook on the subject, to help their students learn from my experience.
It was an instant bestseller and I thank Citibank for its outstanding success. The bank sponsored three print runs of the popular book, and in addition sponsored the publication of my cassette recordings of my radio programs in Adelaide and Sydney. This enabled my Australian Executive Women ’ s Network members in our 19 branches across Australia to learn from the successful business men and women I interviewed on radio.
I wanted to be a school teacher when I was at school but my family couldn ’ t afford to send me to Teachers College. I didn ’ t let this stop me and in 1968 with 5 years experience working on one of the first IBM 360 computers installed in Adelaide at the Electricity Trust of South Australia (ETSA), I started my own school, called the Key Punch Centre.
I had no money, but I didn ’ t let that stop me. You can have everything you want in your life, if you know what you want, have faith in your vision, prepared to work passionately and persistently, your dream will be realised.
Having a mentor or coach, who believes in you, is your most valuable resource and its why I ’ m introducing our ‘ Inspire Institute of Masterminds ’ to you in this student textbook.
Age has nothing to do with your success. At 77 I launched ‘ Inspire Institute of Masterminds ’ at the Adelaide Fringe Festival. I had been presenting workshops for the Adelaide Fringe Festival since 2019 when they introduced workshops, talks and seminars for the first time. I was longing to open my own business college since 1995. I was too busy operating other businesses prior to that, but now I ’ m happily passing on my knowledge and experience, along with many others who are semi-retired and willing to support me in this valuable endeavour.
As it wasn ’ t too late for me to take on the biggest challenge of my life, I ’ m sure you can do the same and I ’ m going to teach you how in this student textbook.
Jody and I are proud of Rohan Dennis, because what we were teaching the boys at Blackfriers College was how to understand we are all born with a God-given talent and it doesn ’ t matter if we are not academic. We all have a passion for something we can start as a hobby and later turn into a profitable business, or career, anything ’ s possible.
This is exactly what Rohan Dennis did, he enjoyed riding his bike, so why not practise hard and become world famous by following his lead.
*****
Rohan Dennis was born in Adelaide on 28 th May, 1990 and still lives in Adelaide. He has ridden for the BMC Racing Team. He ’ s been winning races worldwide since 2009 and won the famous Yellow Jacket in the Tour de France in 2015.
He won a silver medal in 2012 in the London Olympic Games, gold in 2010 Ballerup, and gold in 2011 Apeldoorn in the UCI Track Cycling World Championships. In 2009 he won silver and silver the same year in Pruszkow. He won silver in 2012 in Melbourne, Australia. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow he won the silver medal.
In 2018 Rohan Dennis won the World Title four years in a row, and won gold at the Road World Championship ’ s major time trial. “ I can ’ t really explain it. It ’ s an amazing feeling,” Rohan Dennis said when being interviewed. He ’ s also won three grand tours, including one in the Giro d ’ Italia and two in the Vuelta the same year.
In 2018 he won two major Australian awards: Australian Institute of Sport Performance Awards – Male Athlete of the Year and Cycling Australia ’ s Sir Hubert Opperman Medal, which he had previously won in 2015.
Life for Rohan Dennis couldn ’ t be more exciting than travelling the world with his partner cyclist Melissa Hoskins. They had a son in 2018 and now split their time between Girona, La Massana and Adelaide.
This is one Adelaide lad in ‘ Miss M ’ s class of 2006, who turned his hobby into his professional income. If you Google Rohan Dennis you will discover just how famous he is worldwide. I have only listed a few of his accolades since 2009.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Lucille Orr wanted to be a school teacher but her family couldn ’ t afford to send her to Teachers College so she created her own school. After working in the computer industry for six years and owning her own restaurant and delicatessen, she started one of the first data entry training centres in South Australia.
The early success of her training, data processing bureau and staff placement services in Adelaide, made it possible to expand to Melbourne and Sydney. At 28 she owned three homes, three cars and three businesses in three states. She employed over 120 women on the national payroll because women were the only ones learning to type in those days.
After losing her life savings and first successful business, a restaurant to her husband ’ s gambling habit in 1967, she didn ’ t let a lack of money stop her from building her own national computer training/data processing/staff placement enterprise from 1968 - 1975.
At 30 she travelled the world, before being appointed NSW State Manager for Gloria Marshall Figure Salons. She joined the Ansett/TNT Group as their only female manager nationally and held senior management positions with Wang Computer, Adelaide Festival Centre and MLC Life Limited. During these years in 1986 she founded the Australian Executive Women ’ s Network opening 19 branches across Australia with MLC ’ s support and launched the Telecom Australian Executive Woman of the year Award, known today as the Telstra Business Women ’ s Awards.
At 55 Lucille took on one of the toughest challenges of my career by joining the real estate industry. This meant working 24/7 and studying to gain her real estate sales certificate followed by the real estate management diploma, qualifying her within 18 months to open my own real estate company in 2001.
She still owns AWARE P
