AN EXPRESSION OF GRATITUDE
I wish to express my gratitude to the following:
To my family for their deep love and support, without which I could not have written this book. Sai, Hari, and Sabari took extra pains to offer suggestions when the original manuscript was written, and many of their suggestions have been incorporated in the book.
To my brother late Mr. K. Sivaraman Nair, who not only spent hours with me in revising the original manuscript but was also a great source of inspiration and encouragement to me.
To my young friends Jeffrey Yang and Mayank Kumar, who were tireless in typing the manuscript and whose unending enthusiasm always inspired me.
To the staff of Xlibris Publishing Corporation for their dedication and professionalism in working throughout the publication process. Thank you, Lloyd, Michael, Ram, Pat, Teri, Rita and Ken, for your tremendous support and encouragement.
A NOTE TO MY READERS
I have been a student of mental science since 1980. When I could not find answers to some of my pressing problems in life, I was reminded of what the great philosopher Socrates said, “Man know thyself.”
My journey of exploration into the field of the unknown, the mystery of the mind, helped me to find my answers. Since our mind is the instrument of perception, the quality of mind dictates the quality of life. If we do not manage our mind, somebody else will mismanage it for us.
In this book, I have made an earnest attempt to share with my readers my experiences in mind management spanning over three decades. Some of the stories and concepts are repeated on different occasions throughout the book. It is not an accident or an error. It is done with the idea of fostering a better understanding of the mental science principles as they apply to different situations in life.
My journey of exploration still continues, as the more I experience, I am reminded that there is more to know and experience. It is my hope that every reader will find an idea or a story that he or she can apply to improve the quality of everyday life.
Best wishes,
MGN
CHAPTER 1
Nature of the Human Mind
Every human being, regardless of his or her origin or upbringing, is endowed with a marvelous and mysterious apparatus called the mind. It works twenty-four hours a day, producing conditions, events, and experiences in each of our lives. These conditions always take shape in the mind. Your mind is always busy weaving your tomorrow, a tomorrow either of joy or of sorrow, depending upon the thoughts you entertain in your mind.
Your thoughts are the tools with which you work and the only tools you have to shape your destiny. Your experience in the outer world only reveals what is lurking in the secret chambers of your very own mind. Your experience is a mere reflection of your thoughts.
For example, you look into the mirror and you don’t like the face you see. If you are a woman, you’ll change your makeup and hairstyle to look better. If you are a man, you’ll comb your hair, trim your mustache, or shave to look better. But you will not break the mirror because you know that the mirror is only reflecting the face you have. Similarly, your experience in life is a mirror reflecting your inner thoughts.
Your circumstances are merely a looking glass, a mirror of reflection. But in your daily life, without realizing what you are doing, you very often try to break the mirror. For example, if you are not very happy with your income, you start criticizing your employer, your job, your upbringing, and everybody else for your shortcomings. You criticize your boss, who makes more money; you talk maliciously about the chief executive of a big corporation who makes a million dollars a year. They are not going to change your conditions but are merely reflecting your thoughts. To change the conditions, you have to change the causes—your thoughts. Blaming your poor economic condition is like blaming the mirror for your uncharming face. Think about it.
After you study this book, you will learn not to blame the mirror for your poor image. You will consciously start working with causes instead of conditions.
Conscious Mind and Subconscious Mind
The great Hindu seers, who spent their lives in search of truth in uncovering the mysteries of the mind and in realizing the truth that “I and my Father are one,” had used the analogy of an ocean to describe the human mind. An ocean is a massive body of water with a surface and an impenetrable depth beneath it. So is the human mind.

The human mind, like an ocean, is all one but endowed with two entirely different functions.
The surface mind is also called the conscious mind, the objective mind, or the male aspect of the mind. The deeper mind is called the subconscious mind, the subjective mind, or the female aspect of the mind. We will use the terms conscious mind and subconscious mind throughout our discussion.
The Conscious Mind
Most of us use only the conscious mind in our day-to-day transactions with the outside world. We use the sense organs and the brain to gather and process the information. This is done by the conscious mind.
The conscious mind is the choosing mind, the directing mind. It acts like a watchman at the gate. It is the rational mind. It argues. It uses logical reasoning. In other words, it works on the basis of inductive reasoning. Inductive reasoning is a process by which we compare facts to arrive at common elements binding them. In fact, comparison of facts is the basis of inductive reasoning.
The conscious mind is the faculty that is endowed with the power of discrimination. The major difference between man and beast is that while man is endowed with the power of discrimination (the faculty of the conscious mind), the beast is deprived of it. For example, a dog walks into your yard, and you chase him away. But tomorrow it could again make its appearance in your lawn. You go to your neighbor’s house; not only was the neighbor discourteous, but he also insulted you. You will try not to visit the neighbor again until he apologizes. This is because of the power of discrimination, which springs from the faculty of memory.
The conscious mind can also be called the mastermind, the mind that directs and gives orders to the subconscious mind. One of the important objectives of mental science is to train students to use the conscious mind as a vigilante or a guardian angel at the gate of the mind. A perfect harmony between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind is necessary to lead a life of peace and tranquility.
The Subconscious Mind
A major purpose of this book is to make you, the reader, aware of the power of the subconscious mind and how it can be employed to work for you, to bring all the happiness, riches, and the peace of mind that your heart desires. Please read and reread the following pages very carefully so that you can wake up a sleeping giant within you to work for you, to fulfill your desires, and to translate all your dreams into material reality. It does not matter whether it is multiplying your income or buying the dream mansion or occupying an exalted position in society; your subconscious mind can help you achieve that. Most of us go through life without ever recognizing this power that lies dormant in each one of us, regardless of our race, religion, color, or upbringing.
The subconscious mind is the obeying mind. It is subject to the command of the conscious mind. Therefore, it is also called the subjective mind or the passive mind. It does not argue; it simply obeys the commands given to it. In other words, it works on the basis of deductive reasoning. Deductive reasoning presumes that the factors presented are true and proceeds to arrive at a conclusion without verifying the truth or falsity of any statemen
