1. Introduction
When you ask someone about hypnosis, they often think of the old and very outdated image of someone waving a coin or watch in front of someone’s face, putting them in a trance.
Alternatively, they think of hypnotist shows, done for pure entertainment value for the audience. Everyone tends to have a different idea about what hypnosis is and how it is used. Hypnosis is very widely misunderstood by many, largely because of the media’s portrayal of hypnotists.
Hypnosis is very widely used by therapists as well as by performers. The basic principles are the same; it is how the hypnosis is used that differs. Some use it to entertain, which is good, harmless fun and always a crowd pleaser.
Others use it to help people. Therapists use hypnosis to help people overcome difficult situations, improve themselves, stop bad habits, and to overcome fears.
People can even use self-hypnosis for the purposes of self-improvement, overcoming bad habits, and curing insomnia. Hypnosis has a wide variety of uses.
However, there is another side to hypnosis and that is what this book is about. Conversational hypnosis, also called covert hypnosis, is hypnosis techniques practiced during regular interactions with other people, without them knowing about it. Typically, someone who is being hypnotized has volunteered for show or sought out a hypnotherapist. Hypnosis can be used subtly and to your advantage.
We are subject to this type of hypnotism all the time. Every ad we see on TV, on billboards, on buses, and in magazines has been created to have a subliminal effect on us to influence us to buy that product.
Salesmen use these techniques to get us to feel at ease with them and to trust their sales pitch so we buy their wares. Businessmen and speakers also use these techniques as well because they work.
For some, covert hypnosis conjures up images of people hypnotizing people against their will and that is NOT what this book is about. No ethical hypnotist should ever attempt to put someone into a hypnotic trance against their will and that is not what this book is about.
This book is about using conversational hypnosis to be able to influence and persuade people and although it uses hypnotic principles, it does not involve putting people in a trance. Conversational hypnosis is subtle ways to communicate, which will work on the others person’s subconscious, making it easier for you to influence them.
This book will boost your communication skills so that you are a more effective communicator; you will be able to influence people without them even knowing you are doing so.
Some people are great speakers; they can take even the most hostile of people and make them see their way of things. It is not by magic that they can do this, it is conversational hypnosis.
It is the art of causing people to change their minds or to see things your way, without them ever knowing you were influencing them. They think that they came to their conclusion without any influence but in reality, you are using a variety of linguistic techniques and non-verbal cues to help seal the deal.
Here is a great example: Before I knew what conversational hypnosis was, I went to the fair. At any fair, you will find people who are demonstrating products. Now, most of these products are things you do not need.
In my case, I wandered by just as someone was about to demonstrate a blender. I had a blender at home, which I only used maybe three times a year, so I had no interest in the blender but they had some seats that were empty so I took a seat to watch and to rest my feet.
The woman demonstrating the product was talking about how it feels good to eat healthy, and that fresh smoothies are the best way to boost your health, giving you energy. Soon, I was not just thinking about my sore feet, I was watching the demonstration. Everything she said made sense. I did need to eat healthier; I would love to have more energy during the day.
