Description

Success in life and work is affected more by EQ than IQ. This book offers you practical exercises to hone your emotional skills.
As the pandemic was raging in 2021 and wreaking emotional havoc on many people, the author was inspired to start writing a practical self-help book on emotional intelligence. He posted a picture of himself on Facebook with a wall of beautiful flowers behind him. The caption was a quote from singer John Denver, “sunshine on my shoulders keeps me happy.” It received nearly 400 likes/loves. There is a deep yearning for happiness. He then invited his Facebook friends to help him draft the book.
This book is the product of three months of intense and exciting co-creation among twenty people. They helped by commenting, drafting paragraphs or chapters, editing, contributing their photographs, contributing their stories and experiences, planning social media marketing, and helping with the book launching on 14 February 2022. They felt a Guiding Hand and a Purpose behind them. The co-creators of this handbook hope that you, dear readers, will feel it too.

Foreword
Two years of pandemic and being quarantined at home make us graduates of our Master in Survival and Resilience. In the next few months, you will be conferred your doctoral degree in due time. But the question remains: are we going back to Normal? This is no longer an important question to ask.
The question we must ask is this: what will you do tomorrow, next week, next month, or next year? The future is not clear, complicated, and unpredictable, and it is moving fast forward. (The VUCA world as we call it). There is probably an underlying trend worse than the pandemic―the mental and emotional health state in all of us. Many people are facing a lot of mental and emotional health issues that require self-healing or self-care. There is also an undetermined number of people who might need guidance from professionals and life coaches.
This handbook on emotional intelligence is very timely. It can serve emotionally distressed individuals and the professional life coaches helping them. I am pleased that CCLFI―the Community and Corporate Learning for Innovation―had sponsored this handbook.
I have worked for a big healthcare company for over two decades, and for many years before I retired, I headed its Human Capital Management Department (the latest name for Human Resources Department). From this perspective, I strongly recommend this book for several reasons.
First, it is centered on the concept of the unity of the Heart and Mind. In most corporate set up for training and development programs, the focus is on the acquisition of technical competence of the learners, but today, the non-technical aspects of training or what we often call the “soft skills” are now considered essential.
The latest trend in team coaching, particularly the advocates of the Shared Leadership Discipline and the use of ARL (Action-Reflection Tools), has emphasized that team development must put at the center the emotional skills of the members for them to become a high-performing team and greatly impact the organization in which they belong.
Second, the whole person is both body and spirit, and what I love in this handbook is that it anchors learning emotional competencies on the solid foundation of spirituality. This handbook addresses the gap that is lacking in most human resources programs and learning and development (L&D) frameworks.
Third, the application of learning is permanent if it is experiential and practiced regularly by learners. This mode of learning is considered more effective than just listening to a lecture or reading a book. At the Philippine Society for Talent Development, we apply the use of experiential learning in our instructional design (70-20-10 model) and our certification program for the master’s training course.
And finally, the best part of this book is that it is a product of real-life experiences being told in a story, co-shared, co-created, and co-designed by the group, which makes this handbook very insightful to read and re-read. It is meant to be shared with others. I have been myself a co-sharer and co-designer of an earlier book of the author and my dear friend and mentor Serafin (or Apin). I commend each member of the group who made this handbook possible, a real product of teamwork and co-creation. Congratulations on walking your talk.
I highly recommend this handbook to all leaders and coaches who be
