Daily, I look myself in the mirror to remind myself I am underachieving, and I must keep learning and staying relevant in the world today so I can make an impact and be influential. I know I can achieve more because when I compare what I know today versus a few months ago or a year ago, I see that I could have done better in the past if I had the knowledge I have today. You also don’t know what you don’t know you don’t know, so I want to learn fast so I can achieve more. Achieving more is not just a quantity; for me, it is being able to win trophies and close out many of my opportunities.

When we decided to publish Prove Yourself in 2015, our company KIC Ventures, was the only Black-owned healthcare holding company in the world focused on investing in spine surgery. I was the Chief Executive Officer and had just recently celebrated the acquisition of Axiomed Corporation in 2014 with the world’s most unique viscoelastic total disc replacement technology. The LESS Institute, my orthopedic and spine surgery clinical practice, was very busy treating patients with orthopedic and spine problems, and our medical device company, SpineFrontier Inc., saw sales rising year after year since 2007 with double digit EBIDTA. So in 2015 KIC Ventures was on track to generate over $40 million in combined revenues that year. My mindset was with all this rising success, I should publish a book that could help other entrepreneurs and the future generations of students who want to become entrepreneurs along with their parents especially single mothers like my mother. We published the book November 2015 and it turned out that many readers were inspired by my life lessons and self-development tips in addition to the concrete business start-up lessons. However, we also got suggestions to touch up the content and publish a paper back version. We also noted we were not getting student readers nor parents.
So we decided to publish a revised edition to add more about my life journey from childhood at the beginning of the book. We wanted students to see similarities with my struggles at all levels of my education. Can you develop a vision early in your childhood ? In this revised version the answer is yes, in fact you will see from my journey that I maintained my vision from early childhood to today. Most children dream big if presented with the environment and if they can then nurture the beginning of their vision it could be the guiding star for them the rest of their lives. This book should provide life inspiration for children.
I also added more insights into each chapter for readers who want in-depth easy-to-understand business lessons they can really follow. The original business lessons were expanded to be more usable in general and to be more easily digestible by anyone who want business literacy at any stages of life. Parents know students do not get financial lesson in their education even if they take business classes and so they will feel encouraged to find great lessons in this edition. The business financial lessons in this book are written to be easily applied not the academic form you get in business courses that are more business principles. It is my hope that readers can use the twelve lessons as a continuous reference in their every day life whether they are an entrepreneur now or thinking of getting a jump start on becoming an entrepreneur. I hope to see this book become a source of encouragement for entrepreneurship among young people in developing countries as the way to end world poverty and hunger and raise the standard of living for everyone.
At the end of the day, in this revised version of Prove Yourself , I further shared my life’s journey and the twelve lessons that I followed to get started and navigated my way to what seemed like impossible personal and business successes for a poor Black boy born to a single teenage mother in a tiny town called Buff Bay, nestled along the North-East shores of Jamaica. If I could rise from poverty in a small country, dream and follow my dreams to attend the top Ivy-League Universities such as Columbia University, Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School, plus build a successful company generating hundreds of millions in revenues and share my lessons for you to read, I expect you too will be inspired and fe
