This book is dedicated
in memory
of
Shirley & Charles Schreiber
Their wisdom and training taught me how to be successful, but their kindness and friendship taught me how to be a better person.
Special thanks for contributions from my wife Andrea, my son-in-law Sean Terry, my brother-in-law Mike Faulds and friend Beatrice Berry
Preface
I have read many success books through the years that often proclaim to reveal the “secret to success”. Yet after reading even the best of them, I often wonder why the lives of their readers continue down the same road with little or no changes in their level of success.
My library is full of interesting and informative books that did not accomplish their intent. I have found many of these books are on the right path with the knowledge of “what” to do, but they lack the message of “how” to do it. Readers can finish a book, put it down and often either don’t make any positive changes to their life or they were not given the tools to make the needed change to achieve a higher level of success.
I wanted to write this book to share with you the “methods” I have learned over many years from my mentors on how everyone can be successful. Whether you are looking to be more successful in your business or in your personal life, the principles you will learn will help you make your goals and dreams a reality.
Please follow the lessons and instructions in this book carefully so you can apply them to your own life and see the “results” you really want.
Chapter One
Invisible Walls
My mentors, Shirley and Charles Schreiber, who taught me well, always said this,
“It is NOT what you know, it is what you USE of what you know”.
Too often someone might say to themselves, “I will never have the high success I dream of. I am just not blessed with a lot of potential.” Perhaps they are thinking that other people have so much more going for them than they do. What a common but terrible excuse for not being successful and having what you want in life.
Me the Average Guy
Growing up, you would say I was average at best. I had average looks, with average grades. I liked sports, but didn’t excel in any one sport. And oh yea, my personality...let’s just say I was super shy. I never even dated once in high school. I was too shy to ask a girl out. Let’s just say, I wasn’t seen by myself, or anyone else, as having a lot of “potential” coming out of high school. OK Wes, what about your college experience? Well college was no better except I did manage to find a pretty girl I really loved and soon married.
After just two years of college, I went looking for work to support my family, armed only with my 2 year Associates Degree from a community college. The best thing people would say about me is, “He is such a nice young man.” What is interesting is those I envied in high school and college, the ones with the good looks, good grades, very popular and overall big potential...they weren’t always ultimately successful in life. Potential is no guarantee of later success.
The Missing Key
Remember what I shared from my mentors. It is not what you know and have going for you that counts. It is knowing how to apply what you know.
This is the missing key: We must take the right actions to bring about the desired results. Bottom line: It is knowing how to apply the right knowledge to the right action that finally brings about the desires we crave.
This truth is confirmed in real life. Many of the most successful people in the world will tell you, they did not have many good things going for them. They did not have education, looks, etc., yet despite this, they reached their dreams and beyond. So how did they become successful and how can you?
What do you need to know and what do you do first?
If you went to the airport and walked up to the ticket counter, what is the person working behind the counter going to ask you?
Maybe they might ask for your ID or how many bags you have to check but the important question is...
”Where do you want to go?”
Where you want to go is your GOAL.
Too often people just go through life with no direction and no destination. People just get through another day and they have no real goals. They might believe they have goals because they have big dreams, but a dream is nothing more than wishful thinking without direction. You must know where you want to go and not just let life take you any which way. Determine your destination (goals) and have an action plan (buy a ticket). Without goals, it is a recipe for frustration and failure.
Stop right now and think about “where” you want to go. Are you on the right plane going in the direction you want or are you stuck at the airport not sure of where you will end up down the road?
The Self-Image
How We See Ourselves and Our World
OK, you must know where you are going AND also who you are. How you see yourself is your “self-image”.
However, did you know you actually have TWO self images? There is one self-image who is the person you are right now. It is how you see yourself. It is NOT how other people see you, it is only how you and you alone see yourself.
The other self-image is the person you would like to be or become.
Your current self-image sets the paradigms or boundaries of who you are and what you believe you are capable of doing. How you see yourself determines your level of success in every part of your life. Your self-image sets both the highs and the lows for whatever you attempt to do. It predetermines what new experiences you will try, how much money you make and even how happy you will be.
