Introduction
We each and all practice timeless wisdom every day of our life, without even knowing it. Our patterns of living have developed over time, over a very long time. We’re usually much more active during daylight than we are during the night. It seems to make more sense recharging our inner batteries by sleeping during the hours of darkness than during daylight. Unless, of course, we’re working a night shift. Timeless wisdom is a glorified name for common sense.
Book Three has been complete for quite some time. Months? Years? Centuries? How can I know, for sure? I may have been led to believe that I was part of it all, beyond playing the typist. Was I really the simple seeker? Or was my personality designed to present as such? Life is still a mystery to me, and yet I seem to have always needed to try to make sense of it all.
It’s never too late to live a life that makes sense. Life is an art that we are each and all developing. Some have learned what it takes to make them feel satisfied with their life, while others are still restless to discover what it is that will give them a sense of satisfaction with how they live their life.
The timeless wisdom traditions of all cultures were designed to help us find a way – to help us discover what it takes to make life worth living. Some traditions stressed worship of a powerful God who would protect us from our enemies and reward us with riches if we obeyed the rules of that religion. It didn’t always work in the best interest of all members of whatever culture, for some individual humans took control of the religion, and imposed rules that were not designed to bring happiness to all, but to maintain positions of power over the mases, by a few.
Prophets came and went in all cultures. How different were they from philosophers? Prophets looked to an all-powerful being for the answers to life’s problems. Philosophers looked a little closer to home – to the individual and his/her state of mind – our individual awareness of personal problems and how they developed, and how intent the individual was in trying to improve the quality of one’s life – how willing to take personal responsibility for making life worth living, and more, to make life a joy.
The danger of the personal approach to quality of life is that there is a risk of underestimating the powerful influence of the community on our personal life. We each are part of a community, an ever-expanding and ever more diverse community of people, places, and things.
We are part of the galaxy of stars, and they influence us more than most of us are aware of. So it is with the world we live in, here on Planet Earth. Our nations’ leaders make decisions that affect the well-being of us all. So it is with authorities closer to home. Even family members and friends, not to mention our employers, have power over us, at least to some extent.
We need to find our way in our community, or we are likely to be pushed to the edges of it and find ourselves in need of food and shelter.
So, where does the art of timeless wisdom fit into such a threatening possibility? We need to learn survival skills; physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. Spirit teaches a simple seeker these basic physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual skills.
How does Spirit teach? He often pokes fun at how inappropriate her responses to life situations sometimes are, and then helps her to understand that there is a more appropriate way to respond. It requires developing consistent and satisfying patterns of response, and not simply how to respond to particular situations. If that were the case, He tells her, we’d have to learn ten thousand different ways to respond. It would likely prove to be too much of an effort, and we would backslide to old ways that sometimes worked, but more often, did not. We need to develop flexibility and yet, also, consistency. Not an easy game to play.
The good news, for you dear readers, is that you can simply enjoy witnessing this simple seeker’s struggle to adapt to Spirit’s teachings, while still remaining true to herself, or as true as she can. You may learn something. and you may not. Each of us learns according to our own style, and what impresses some may have no affect on some others. Whatever, I hope you enjoy the book.
Love,
Jean Whitred

LESSON 1 The Challenges Raise the Bar
A simple seeker was weary of the seemingly endless and ever-more-challenging levels of emotional, intellectual, and spiritual development that her spirit teacher seemed to require of her.
“It’s just too much for my simple mind to deal with. I can’t do it.”
“Perhaps you’re not interested enough.”
“If interest was all it took, I’d have it all together. But I’m dealing with constraints not entirely of my own choosing. I simply don’t seem to have what it takes, or might take, whatever that might be, to absorb all the thoughts that you share with me.”
“You did choose, and are now, perhaps, trying to avoid responsibility for your freely-made choices.”
“How free are we to make choices, when the choices we seem to need to make are often between two or more unacceptable options? I struggle, as perhaps many others do, within constraints not necessarily of my own choosing.”
“Constraints are necessary to future progress in any discipline or area of human development, including physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. They provide challenges to our present level of skill. They also soften ego’s often smug sense of satisfaction in moments of victory.”
“But it’s such a struggle.”
“Yes. But challenges that we have faced and overcome seem to whisper in our inner ear, “Perhaps we should raise the bar.””

A Simple Seeker’s Note to Herself
The Challenges Raise the Bar
Spirit doesn’t seem to understand that some of us are more or less capable than are some others.
“I’ll never ask of you more than I know you that are capable of achieving with a little effort. Well, perhaps with a little more effort than you now seem willing to put into your future level of conscious awareness.”
“My future level of conscious awareness?”
“Yes.”
“What about my present level?”
“It’s too late to improve on that.”
“Why?”
“We are now the result of past effort.”
“Even if we didn’t know then that we were practicing for now?”
“Yes.”
