Insights from Chapter 1

#1

When she sits with CBS 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley, nine-year-old Azhaar Jendia will be solemn and composed. She has drawn herself with her biggest problem solved, and herself in a grave with her solution being to be murdered by Israelis.

#2

The third drawing is How will you get from where you are to where you want to be. The girl who delights in Nature is now indoors, reading a book. She will study hard so that she can go to medical school.

#3

The Transformation is a program that helps you address the biological, psychological, and social damage that trauma inflicts. It provides you with the tools and techniques of self-care, and helps you understand and use trauma as a door that opens a world of wisdom to you.

#4

Trauma is an inescapable part of life, and the path of self-discovery and self-care that it opens up for us can lead us to lives of heroism and compassion.

#5

The promise of trauma is that it allows us to fulfill our spiritual potential. It allows us to discover who we are and connect with something greater than ourselves. It allows us to find meaning in life, and heal.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The fight-or-flight response is when we’re threatened emotionally as well as physically, and it’s mediated by the hypothalamus and the amygdala. It increases our heart and respiratory rates, raises our blood pressure, and sends more blood to our large muscles.

#2

The fight-or-flight and freeze responses are important and necessary, but they are designed to meet acute emergencies. They can last a long time when dealing with chronic stress.

#3

The effects of trauma can be felt throughout our lives. We may feel helpless, angry, and guilty, and we may feel like we’re responsible for what happened to us. We may also feel like we’re doomed to repeat the events of our past forever.

#4

The American society is one of rugged individualists who find vulnerability uncomfortable, even shameful. In other places where I’ve worked, an emphasis on being strong has similar consequences. We push life’s inevitable suffering and death to the periphery of our minds and the edges of our social world.

#5

When we are stressed, we often lose our appetite, and we may also eat compulsively and fast. When we eat quickly, the enzymes in our mouth don’t have time to do their digestive job, and the rest of our GI tract suffers.

#6

Stress can also affect the production of digestive enzymes by the liver and pancreas, as well as the detoxification processes by which the liver protects us from harmful food by-products and environmental toxins.

#7

The trauma-food interaction is powerful and is built into our evolutionary biology. We need to run from or fight a predator, and we need quick energy foods that are easily broken down into sugar.

#8

The more you eat comfort foods, the more you become hooked on them. When you try to cut down on your consumption of them, you feel worse, and may even develop withdrawal symptoms. This is a health-threatening vicious cycle.
Insights from Chapter 3

#1

Meditation is the antidote to trauma. It brings us into the present moment, and helps us recover from the effects of stress. It can also help us live longer, happier, and healthier lives.

#2

Meditation is a treatment of choice for all of us, for healing trauma, building resilience, preventing illness, and enhancing happiness.
