The breath is a good anchor to bring you back into the present moment because you are only breathing now. It is not about the breath, but about the relationship between what seems like the perceiver and the perceived.

We often say that we are breathing, but in reality, it is not up to us to keep the breath going. The brain stem takes care of that very nicely. We might have some influence on the expression of our core aspects of biology, but we are not allowed to say that we are really doing the breathing.

The work of cultivating mindfulness is both difficult and enjoyable. It is a lifelong challenge for each of us to grow into the fullness of who we are, and it is a way for our very being to express itself authentically.

When it comes to mindfulness, each of us brings our own genius to the table. We cannot help but make use of and build on everything that has come before us, even if much of it was and is painful.

Mindfulness is paying attention on purpose in the present moment and non-judgmentally. It is what arises when you pay attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally, and as if your life depended on it.

Mindfulness helps us remember that we can shift from a doing mode to a being mode through the application of attention and awareness. Then our doing can come out of our being and be much more integrated and effective.

Mindfulness has been shown to be effective in reducing stress and stress-related medical problems, as well as anxiety, panic, and depression. It has also been shown to positively affect the way the brain processes difficult emotions under stress.

Mindfulness is the heart of Buddhist meditation. It is not a Buddhist activity, however. It is a human capacity that is innate in all of us. Buddhism has developed a vast range of different meditative practices, which ultimately lead to the same thing: a deeper understanding and appreciation of mindfulness.
