Insights from Chapter 1
#1
The first element of the SPIRE of happiness is spiritual wellbeing. We can experience spirituality in two ways: when we’re feeling a sense of meaning and purpose in what we’re doing, and when we’re fully present and focused in the moment.
#2
There are people who see their work as a job, a career, or a calling. The question is, which is the predominant mindset. How do you feel about your work in general. Most of us experience all three perspectives, at different times.
#3
The researchers found that the dominant perspective in your life makes all the difference in terms of your overall wellbeing, as well as how you end up doing in that work in the long run. For example, doctors who viewed their work as a calling were more helpful and friendly than those who viewed it as a chore.
#4
The calling mindset does not just apply to the workplace, but also to parenting. If you have little kids at home, you could choose to see your parenting job as a calling, where you see your children as your most important responsibility.
#5
You have control over how you perceive your responsibilities. Finding meaning in your activities can make all the difference in terms of how you go through your days, weeks, and life.
#6
When there is a sense of meaning and purpose in what you do, the path to overcoming difficulties becomes less daunting. Very often, connecting with your purpose is what makes the difference between fragility and antifragility.
#7
The most important thing is to remember the value and importance of what you do. It doesn’t take much, just a few minutes of awareness, to make a difference.
#8
There are many ways to experience spirituality, and one of them is through mindfulness meditation. It is present-moment awareness, without judgment. It can be awareness of breath, another physical sensation, an object, an activity, or anything else.
