The Journal was produced at the time for people coming to his talks and as a record of the current themes in his teaching. It's a collection of his writings and sayings, along with extracts from his extensive correspondence and edited transcripts of public talks. Three volumes were published serially and together they are a kaleidoscope of spiritual insights and inspirational wisdom. The Journal is easy-to-read and offers a fascinating glimpse into both the global and the cosmic vision of one of the most powerful teachers of the twentieth century.

BARRY LONG ’ S JOURNAL documented a living teaching and collected his writings, sayings and letters with notes made on his travels and extracts from his public talks and seminars. Also included are longer keynote articles that focus on the theme of cosmic consciousness and its practical application to living the divine life.
The Journal was published originally in parts as the ongoing record of Barry Long’s life and teaching in 1990 and 1991. It charted the introduction of cosmic consciousness to his audience as he travelled the earth becoming a world teacher.

The next stage of my public teaching is about to begin. Since 1981 I have been imparting what I call ‘living the divine life’. Living the divine life does not end. It’s the only way to live, but it’s not an end in itself. Out of living the divine life arises the possibility of cosmic consciousness. That is the new focus of my teaching.
Cosmic consciousness means having the speed of perception at which participation in the hidden life of the universe opens up. The being actually perceives and becomes a part of the universal reality which determines life on earth. The being knows and realises its part in purpose. This is outside the range of normal everyday awareness. It is therefore beyond the ignorance of the world.
The ignorance of the world is what you’re endeavouring to overcome by living the divine life. The ignorance, or the world, is like a great magnet which constantly pulls you down. The divine life speeds up your consciousness – by slowing you down. For stillness is the way. But you still need more energy, more power of lift-off, to escape. In this next phase, I am imparting that.
The divine life is what every religion and master since time began, has endeavoured to communicate to those who would listen. So far, the results have been expressed in such terms as God-realisation, self-realisation, liberation, enlightenment. But what is the purpose of J Krishnamurti’s state of consciousness? Or Ramana Maharshi’s? Or any master of our times?
All the masters made a contribution to the possibility of cosmic consciousness on earth. Everything is an aggregate of what has come before. Cosmic consciousness is now a realisable possibility for a number of people on earth.
Cosmic consciousness as I mean it, is not anything to do with popular New Age theories and contemporary explanations of the term. In fact it seems to be off the popular agenda at present. Cosmic consciousness is a reality. And I, who am cosmically conscious, can only demonstrate it every moment. There is no past or future in it, and yet it can be brought into the world of past and future. It is a mighty romance and adventure that knows no end.
That is where my teaching is going in this world, where everything happens. As a part of this, more people than ever before are beginning the process of self-realisation around me. This is due to the stillness of my teaching, my being. I am producing nothing. And this nothing is right up against every person’s self, which is producing everything. When my energy, the stillness of my nothing – for I am giving them nothing – confronts the self, the self starts to lose everything that it was or had. In other words, it starts to lose its self, for self is nothing but self-ignorance. Self-realisation, then, despite all the fancy western and quasi-eastern concepts of it, is simply the realisation of your own ignorance.
Self-realisation is a climacteric in the divine life, as I teach it. It takes twenty to forty years, and is rarely completed before the age of fifty or sixty. There’s a wide range between the beginning of the self-realisation process and the end of it. Although it is all to do with the realisation of ignorance, it marks the entrance of the consciousness into the indescribable state of BEING.
I, the master, am beyond self-realisation. I am being.

Cosmic consciousness
The purpose of life on Earth is for you to be cosmically conscious.
Cosmic consciousness is the truth that embraces all knowledge and makes it one – mythic knowledge, scientific knowledge and self-knowledge.
I will introduce you to the possibility of being cosmically conscious. This is the next phase in living the divine life that I teach. My public teaching of the past eight years has been a preparation. This does not mean that only those who have practised the teaching can make the transition. It is available to all who come and are earnest. Anyone new draws immediately on the consciousness of those who preceded them. No one is ‘in front’. The reason is that cosmically speaking, the world consciousness, the human psyche, is one.

This teaching is going global.
The significance of this is that those who are with me, and especially those who serve me, are going to share in the experience of going global in the external world, with a new energy inside of them – going global in themselves, more profoundly, more widely, more broadly in themselves.
If you can’t stay with me, it’s best not to stay with me and go your way. But to the degree that you can stay with me, you serve, and that service is love. And love is the medium of communication. Therefore you serve yourself. For the profundity of this teaching reaches you and helps you to find what you want most, which is the mystery of yourself or the truth of yourself.
Now this does have a reciprocal. And that is that the pressures will be on you more in your life, because you can’t invoke a profundity of energy that will help you, without invoking the other side of that energy which will make sure that you live your life more truly, more rightly, more honestly.
So be prepared for the pressures in your life but don’t be afraid of them. Be practical. Face them knowing what is happening. Because you know what you are doing.
You are helping me to go global, that requires me to have more energy, more love, more service. As a reciprocal of that you have to have more energy.
Energy always has to come out of your life, out of your eventual life. You don’t just pluck it out of anywhere. So where you are wasting energy in not being true to your life, or honest to your life, you can expect pressure to come down there, on that area, to make you face up to it and release a finer energy which will help you to be more profound, more real to yourself.
The nearer anyone is to me in service or in love, and they’re both the same, the more pressure they are under to be honest and true, because this teaching – the fundamental of it – is to be honest and true to life. So it follows that naturally you will be under that pressure. But at
