Barry Long made a significant original contribution to the evolution of consciousness on earth. He was arguably the most radical teacher of the 20th Century. This book represents the culmination of his work. It’s a testament to his revolutionary teachings.
BARRY LONG knew he was dying. He set about writing down his last words on the main themes of his spiritual teaching. He wanted to leave behind a full account of what he considered to be his original contribution to the evolving consciousness on Earth.
No one before him had been able to strip away spiritual traditions to reveal the universal truth with such boldness and practicality; with such contemporary relevance. No other teachers of his generation were quite so willing to take on the unhappiness of the human condition by dealing with personal intimate questions about relationships, and particularly sexual relations – all without losing sight of the divine. No other enlightened teacher or master had seen into the cosmic scheme of things and at the same time been able to bring universal principles down to earth with such power and immediacy.

Author’s Note
This book consists of separate writings on the spiritual life. Beginning with everyday relationships, it takes the reader into the bigger picture of love, life, death, God and recurrence, and culminates in the author’s perception of reality. In an attempt to make each item complete in its own context within the overall theme, some necessary repetition or recapping occurs. After an initial reading, this will enable the reader to keep ‘dipping into’ the text over time and discovering new insights without getting lost. The purpose of the book is to awaken the dormant and powerfully revealing self-knowledge that is in everybody underneath the concerns of the surface mind and emotions.
What I’ve written in this book is from my self-knowledge, from my realisations of what I call God, love, life or truth, as well as from my experience of having lived in the world for nearly eighty years. I don’t expect what I say or write to agree with anyone else’s knowledge, opinions or beliefs. If anyone disagrees that’s okay; I’ve nothing to prove that I know of. The reader will either enjoy the book, learn from it, find in it affirmations of their own knowledge – or discard it. To me negative reactions are irrelevant but to the reader they are important indications of new areas of self-knowledge yet to be addressed. Nevertheless, it’s always pleasing to know someone has enjoyed and gained from what is offered. I’m frequently asked where my knowledge and seeming authority originates. As I’ve said, the source of all real knowledge is God, the indescribable reality. But there was an overt point in my early mystical life where a divine authority was apparently bestowed on me, although I didn’t realise the full significance at the time. It happened in broad daylight in a vision. The Lord or God spoke to me revealing the fundamental truth of everybody’s existence. An account of the vision is in the text. I don’t ask anyone to believe this. All I can suggest is that you read to the end of the book and form your own conclusion as to whether or not I have the knowledge, the gnosis, to write such a work.

RELATIONSHIPS
The Trials of Love
To be in relationship with anyone or any thing means you are dependent on that object. Dependence means you are attached to the person or thing. And attachment means that when the person dies or leaves you, or when you lose or are losing the object, you will know emotional pain or discomfort.
The longer the relationship, the deeper the attachment, and the longer it takes to heal the disturbance.
There is a common exception. If you are unhappy living with a person in an intimate relationship and you leave them with a sense of relief, the other will know pain and suffer. Or the children will. Someone has to suffer where there has been attachment.
And it is most likely you will still suffer in the aftermath of such a break-up. You may have to face being without your children, or legal proceedings, or financial loss. Or a multitude of other possible causes of aggravation and frustration, or simply the harassment of your own feelings of guilt, anger, self-dou
