Description

Light on Life brings the insight and wisdom of Indian astrology to the Western reader. Jyotish or Indian astrology is an ancient and complex method of exploring the nature of time and space and its effect upon the individual. Formerly a closed book to the West, the subject has now been clarified and explained by Hart deFouw and Robert Svoboda, two experts and long-term practitioners. In Light on Life they have created a complete and thorough handbook that can be appreciated and understood by those with very little knowledge of astrology. Jyotish states that by considering the state of the cosmos when an event occurs, we can begin to understand its nature and to prepare an appropriate response. Although there are similarities with Western astrology there are also profound differences. Jyotish is, above all, infused with the religious, psychological and physical spirit of India. This comprehensive and enlightening book on the subject will prove a necessity to every astrologer or student of Indian thought.

LIGHT ON LIFE
Robert Svoboda has lived in India for nearly fifteen years. He graduated from the Talak Ayurveda College of the University of Poona in 1980 as the first and, until today, only Westerner ever to become a licensed Ayurvedic physician. Since then he has travelled extensively, lecturing and conducting workshops on Ayurvedic and other subjects. Among his writings on Ayurveda are three books: Prakruti: Your Ayurvedic Constitution, The Hidden Secret of Ayurveda and Ayurveda: Life, Health and Longevity (Arkana, 1992), and a self-study programme, The Ayurvedic Home Study Course. His books Aghora: At the Left Hand of God and Aghora II: Kundalini introduce some of the little-known. Tantric traditions of his teacher, Vimalananda. It was Vimalananda who first set him to study Jyotish, and he has since pursued this study under the direction of various experts, including in particular Mr Hart deFouw. Dr Svoboda is on the staff of the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and divides his time among North America, India and the rest of the world.
Hart deFouw has been studying and practising Vedic astrology since 1968. He trained intensively for fifteen years with his Indian Vedic astrology teacher, who also introduced him to other relevant components of classical Indian culture. Since 1988, he has travelled extensively by invitation to give lectures, seminars and consultations world-wide. He is a featured and popular speaker at international conferences. He is a visiting faculty member and a board member at the Ayurvedic Institute of New Mexico.
Dedication
We join a long line of jyotishis in invoking the blessings of the incomparable Ganesha, the Remover of Obstacles, the Lord of Jyotish and the Divine Patron of scribes. To the extent that Ganesha sees fit to to have this work accepted as a faithful account of the foundations of Jyotish, to that extent will it help to preserve and spread the knowledge of Jyotish.
We thank our Gurus, especially the astonishingly gifted and knowledgeable Mantriji, who planted the seed of Jyotish in us and nurtured it over many years. Although he preserves his anonymity, this work is dedicated to him. Without his guidance we would be overwhelmed by the enormity of Jyotish.
I (Hart deFouw) give tender thanks to my wife, Aletha, for being a pillar of support over the past twenty years while I pursued my dream. Without her practical support in the trenches of life, I would still be dreaming!
