I was in Patpong one night when I saw a fight club, with a wiry man in a boxing ring facing off against a large king cobra. The snake struck at him repeatedly as he nimbly dodged its bite. The crowd cheered as he eluded the snake’s bite.

In Thailand, a fight between two white men and two Thai women quickly turned into a brawl, and I was caught in the middle of it. I was terrified for my life. I prayed to God for a miracle.

The priest I saw today said that everything is synchronicity, and that nothing is random. He explained that Tuk Tuk Kid was in the right place at the right time and grabbed the opportunity.

The debate over what came first, the chicken or the egg, has been going on since long before Aristotle. It brings us back to India and the world’s oldest continuously practiced religion, Hinduism. Hindus refer to the soul as the atman. They believe the atman preexists the human body and is eternal.

In the Middle Ages, the debate over whether the soul and body were separate was settled. In this period, the concept of separation of church and state was unknown. Practically every country was a form of theocracy, meaning that religion and government were tightly intertwined.

The Age of Discovery, which occurred in the sixteenth century, led to the rise of the European colonial empires, which occupied countries around the globe until the empires’ demise after the Second World War. The rise of the scientific method led to a growing class of intellectuals who began to openly question whether the concepts of a soul and an afterlife were merely mythological.
