Description

Question for You. Do you have an addiction to dieting and an addiction to food? Pam and her husband had these strongholds for long decades, despite their love for their faith and success in other life areas. In her book, "Bariatric Surgery or, the Old Fashioned Way?," she shares with you her ultimate surrender in this area. She also includes chapters using experts in the field of metabolism and personal training. There is an Appendix of experts and websites that is helpful.

Bariatric surgery, for the morbidly obese, gives a wonderful and lengthy "time out" to regain mental stability and make physical changes. Far more patients, (than in early surgery days), take advantage of this "time out" but too many still do not. The surgery alone does not create lifetime maintenance. The surgery does give a lifetime "edge" along with new habits.

Pam is in a small category of Bariatric patients from the 1990's who have maintained their weight loss. From 1995 she has watched historical changes in improvements and more realistic promotions of the surgery. The weight maintenance numbers have grown as clinics now teach that the surgery is only a "tool." In her book Pam gives credit for this dramatic change to the wonderful blogging sites available to patients, authored by patients themselves.

In nineteen years as a Personal Trainer Pam promoted moderation in a personal exercise regime – not throwing up, passing out or crying! Pam says, "We would all rather play than work; one is an obligation, the other is pure joy."

"Bariatric Surgery or, the Old Fashioned Way?" shows readers how to recapture the joy of eating, moving and living without guilt, pain or fear. God does not condemn us, but rather uses conviction, and He never gives up on us! Be encouraged in this book that "God is For You!"

In regard to the obesity surgeries, if a patient’s surgery turns out to accomplish “physician assisted starvation” for a considerable time post-op, he may not immediately recognize the need to re-program his mindwith regard to food, exercise, and lifestyle habits. This short-term success is, therefore, usually just that: short term! As post-op years increase, he will certainly notice the gradual increase in weight gain as he isable to have more food and has not yet adopted anexercise program. Unfortunately, when he arrives at this point he won’t have thesafety netof having done alotof mental work and internal changes in attitude and habits, because until that moment arrived he did not have to, and he probably thought he would never have to. Simply said, the surgery workedtoo wellforAdopt Pam’s thoughts and educational points to prevent re-gain! Astoo long. Pam says, “the surgeon operated on your stomach, not on your brain!”Tracy Asmussen, Sociologist “This was one of the most encouraging books I have ever read! DEDICATED TO MY HUSBAND OF 30 YEARS! Robert Al Harrelson July 15, 1947 July 9, 2000 Two Bariatric Surgeries  This is an e-mail that Al wrote to a friend before he died. She sent
it to me in the regular mail just two days after his funeral. We had
never met her. They were each involved in Harrelson genealogy
research online. You will be able to see from his letter to Dee that he
wanted our book written. It delighted me and surprised me when I read
his thoughts to a stranger. He also called me his “lovely wife!” In it he
confirms our suffering over the years. Al’s words in this e-mail
reminded me ofmany conversations that he and I hadaboutbelieving
in meto write this book in order to help others in bondage to this
terrible addiction. Al died three years after his gastric by-pass surgery.
From: AL H To: Dee
Date: Monday, March 13, 2000 Subject: Prospect
Concern
Hi Dee,
“As for me, as you can read in my link, I am waiting
on a heart transplant. By the grace of God I have
been able to stay at home most of the time. Since I
can rest and take my medication I have been able to
have a quality life style. As for my possible surgery,
recent tests in the last 2 weeks indicate I need
another angiogram tomorrow - to determine if I
need bypass surgery. My cardiologist believes it will
be necessary, however, we shall see tomorrow. My
diagnosis has been dilated cardiomyopathy with an
ejection fraction as low as 114k.
Am I concerned with the prospect of surgery? For
years I had the Type A lifestyle. The first time I was
diagnosed with DCM in 1986, I took my office to the
hospital with me. In 1996 I had another major
episode with DCM. My cardiologist told me I needed
to retire from work. You know how we Type A’s are
(in one category), we go through a stage of denial. I
loved my job more than I loved my family and God.
In 1997, God put me flat on my back again. I realized
then I could not keep up with the job. My decision
after much prayer was to have a closer relationship
with G o d and not w o r r y a b o u t the
future. Since retiring I do not worry about things. My
family knows where I stand.
Almost everything is done in my life, except knowing
the last thing I am expected to do. My children know that
if I am called to leave this earth they have a father that
loves them with all my heart, despite how sick it is. They
know that I now set the e x a m p l e God wanted me to
leave them with.
The same for my lovely wife, Pam. She raised our
children and now she has finally started her career as a
Personal Trainer where she can help others. She hopes
one day to write a book about our experiences with
obesity, bariatric surgery, and what needs to be done to
change a person’s life style before it has been ruined as
mine was. Hopefully she will be able to do this using my
life’s example and her life’s example. She has changed
her presentation title from “The Dieting Mentality” to
“Where’s the Truth?”
Thanks for all your effort on the NCBLAOEN list.
I plan on emailing you again soon!”
He said almost everything in his life is done, except knowing the
lastthing he is supposed to do. The moment I read the letter, standing
by my mailbox, I knew that it was a message from his grave. What
was the last thing he was supposed to do? Could it be inspiring me
through this surprise email, delivered to me through a stranger?
INTRODUCTION--HOW CAN I HELP YOU?
The bulk of this manuscript wasself-publishedas a beautiful book in print
years ago in 2009 under the title, “The Rest of the Truth.”
In 2012 it was self-
publishedonlyas an EBook under a new title “Practical Advice for Lifetime
Maintenance After Bariatric Surgery.” Edits in both books represented a
reflection of the changing surgical perspectives and patient experiences at that
time. This “surgical experiment” on the morbidly obese has progressed and
changed dramatically since 1980 when I had my first surgery, and again from
1995, after my second surgery. I am re-focused in this edition with greater
pursuit to faith based readers, as there are now many more patients and bariatric
surgeons in this category. I hope others read it as well, as it is a loving outreach.
If you are obese, pre-bariatric surgery, post-bariatric surgery, or even just an
average-sized person caught for decades in the terrible cycle of dieting, deprivation;
a feeling of “food addiction,” I believe this message w i l l h e l p y o u.
My focus is not on dozens of sensational fast weight loss stories. My husband
and I lost and regained large amounts of weight 99 times over the course of
24 years. (No, I am not exaggerating!) We never wrote a book
because we were secretly and miserably right back on the dieting
roller coaster immediately afterward, evenafter bariatric surgeries.
Over the last two decades in Personal Training consultations, I have been
surprised to see this dieting roller coaster to be true of many, at any size.
My story and suggestions reveal the convictions that God can lead one to
in following solid Biblical principles, but also reveals that a feeling of
condemnation is never from God.Too many of us who love the
Lord find ourselves in this struggle to make changes from
an addictive, emotionally- obsessive rut to a system of self-control that is
notreliant solely onwill-power.
Lifetime weight maintenance starts with the mind, not with a diet,
and certainly not with a scalpel on the operating table.
God’s amazing interventions in my obesity struggle demonstrate His gentle andtotal
understandingof our human weakness. It expresses a profound belief that with reliance
on our faith, a strong relationship with God, and the guidance of Biblical scripture, our
faith can then translate to more self-control and motivation in the areas of nutrition and
exercise. I pray to expedite this process for you! God isfor youand wants you to get to
the other side of this issue to have the energy you need for others. I did after 38 years!
We can live life to the fullest, enslaved to nothing!
John 10:10 NIVThe enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but I (Jesus) have come to give life and give it to the fullest! Romans 8:37-39 New American Bible“No, in all these things we conqueroverwhelmingly through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities (demons) , nor present things, nor future things, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
