Description

One of six children, Shirley Yanez was born and raised in poverty on a council estate in Leicester in the 1950s. She received no formal education and would later discover that she was dyslexic. She would go on to use her innate confidence, unbreakable self-belief and indestructible drive to escape her difficult start in life, finally reaching the top of the money and power mountain within the hyper-capitalist world of Wall Street and the City of London finance. She became a self-made millionaire in the 1990s through building a global financial headhunting firm, moving bankers and trading teams around the world. However, she found herself miserable and empty, entangled in a world of money, sex, drugs and power. Disillusioned with her life at the top in 2000, she gave up her business, put all her money in the stock market and moved to Hollywood, marrying a total stranger on a whim. Three months after she moved to Los Angeles, the dot.com bubble burst, and she lost her millions. In 2005, she had a near-death experience which left her stranded, homeless, penniless and dying in a shelter in Compton, one of the most dangerous places in the US. Today, 18 years on, Shirley is back safely at home in the UK. Healthy and happy, she has reinvented herself as the Mind Detective. She is back on top with her purpose and passion restored, successfully running a new kind of ethical, sustainable fashion brand: Venus Cow, built on a ,300 government business loan. The business is a social enterprise that helps fund one of her key missions, free talk-therapy work with the homeless and addicted. During her incredible and unimaginable life-changing experience, Shirley began to read the teachings of an earlier 'mind detective', Carl Jung. Using this vital resource, Shirley was able to work herself out of a mental health hell. She went on to self-actualise this new life she deserves and loves. The Mind Detective is not just another self-help book: it is the story of someone who battled against the odds to climb out of the gutter, reach the top, fall to the bottom again and rise back to the top as the truly enlightened, happy and fulfilled person she was always meant to be. It takes depression to understand depression. It takes addiction to know addiction. It takes courage to admit failure. It takes reaching the bottom to find out what really matters in life. It takes near-death to realise what happiness is. Shirley knows this, because she survived herself to finally find herself. Journey through this book with the help of the Mind Detective: it will lead you into your own mind and allow you to discover whether the life you are living today is the life you truly deserve, or whether it is a life handed down to you from your caregivers, circumstances and experiences as a child.

“Your greatest responsibility is to love yourself and to know you are enough.”
I would like to thank firstly my amazing patients, brave enough to allow me to practise my gift. The broken souls suffering in silence, unable to work theirselves out, you know who you are. Next, I would like to thank the dedicated, inspiring work of Carl Jung, a perfect example of leaving something amazing behind to mark the genius he was, helping others through his important work, the inspiration behind this book. Lastly, I want to thank my body for housing my energy, nature for reminding me I am part of something bigger and the universe for expanding since its creation, the wisdom behind the theory of life.
Introduction
I wrote this book because I believe this to be my sacred labour, to extract truth from my own experience and share it with others in hope of easing their burdens. Having a purpose today, a reason to continue living in the universe, has been essential to my own healing and survival after losing millions on the stock market and encountering a near-death experience in Hollywood, in mid-life. I did not believe in myself fully until someone revealed to me that deep inside me there was something valuable, worth listening to, worthy of my trust; that someone was Carl Jung.
On bookshelves all over the planet, in houses, bookstores, libraries, hotels there are millions of writers giving us their two pennies’ worth on the vast subject of understanding the mind, from humorous self-help top tips, to serious medical mental health awareness and psychology. Everything is available from how to, what to, why you should, why you shouldn’t, motivation, the power of positive thinking, self-development, personal growth, stay fit, get fit, lose weight, look great, yet our mental health is currently not thriving; we are barely surviving. How can this be? Understanding why alcoholics drink, why a person commits suicide, why someone overweight cannot lose weight, why a smoker cannot quit, why anxiety and stress cause panic attacks begins by recognising. Unless you have genuinely experienced these issues yourself and recovered, you won’t have the answers.
I am not a qualified doctor, psychiatrist or self-help guru. I am a 62-year-old woman with an extraordinary tale to tell of triumph over tragedy, an unbelievable life-changing journey that transformed me beyond all recognition. Today I am celibate by choice, not religious, happy, healthy, full of life, living my purpose after working myself out of a mental health hell. I have become a mind detective, open and willing to share my own pain, problems and conclusive evidence with the rest of the world, to help save the world. It takes pain to know pain. It takes depression to understand depression. It takes courage to develop courage. It takes spirit to lift spirits. It takes compassion to have sympathy. It takes empathy to understand, and I understand because I know.
To go beyond your own personal issues and problems whatever they may be, you will need to build a solid unbreakable core foundation, which will progress you further to becoming a stronger character. It is only strength of character that helps us endure life challenges more easily. Forgiving yourself is the most important action you can take when breaking away from the self-sabotaging habit of being a victim of internal wounds, unresolved issues and past pain, which have now become part of your existing belief system. With my help, you will learn to pay close attention to your mind as an observer, a loving compassionate witness, not the victim anymore. You will start to see clearly how you think, act and behave, then discover for yourself just how debilitating your negative emotional reactions are.
As a mind detective, I am going to show you how flicking one switch in your mind can change everything in your life forever and how meditation can literally change your brain by shrinking your fear centre, which may have become enlarged after trauma through flashbacks of anxiety or panic. It is not an easy process; we all prefer a comfort zone. So before we can overcome personal misery and irrational fear, we need to go through it. Covering it up, self-medicating, living in denial or suffering in silence does not lessen the pain, it makes it worse.
Self-mastery is about being willing to find a way to transcend fears, breaking through the resistance to change, facing the weak ugly parts within, the fixed mindset, the wrong belief system we automatically follow and buy into that is simply not true or helping us evolve as mature, thinking human beings. If you want to finally discover what has hijacked your happiness and left you destined to fail, understand this truth: resista
