Insights from Chapter 1
#1
Consider what a certification is good for before you spend your valuable education dollars on it. Personal training is an unregulated industry, which means that your 90-year-old grandmother can say she’s a personal trainer.
#2
The best personal trainers have the knowledge and passion to provide a high-quality service. A certification can be a means to get your foot in the door. Many gyms won’t hire you without one.
#3
A certification will not prepare you for training clients. To do a good job, you must have lots of practical and varied experience. Finding a place to work that allows you to grow is important.
#4
There are two types of insurance that you should consider: liability insurance, which will cover you if your client gets hurt in an accident, and professional liability insurance, which will cover you if you're negligent or overstep your boundaries.
#5
Look busy by scheduling fictitious training sessions. When speaking with a new client, suggest that you’ve got lots of appointments scheduled. The more clients you have, the more likely you are to be in demand.
#6
When it comes to reading for professional development, you should consider what you’re reading for, not how much you’re reading. It’s more important to spend time applying the lessons from your many books than it is to read more.
#7
If the content is not relevant to your clients, do not waste your time reading it. If it is something of personal interest to you, bookmark it for later and read it at a time when it is not supposed to be set aside for professional development.
#8
When you start to recognize people whose facts are constantly off-base, you’ll know that they aren’t reliable sources. And you’ll come to know those who are reliable and be more lenient with fact-checking when reading their material.
#9
After reading an article on a single-leg training variation, you determine that it would be a good fit for your clients. You then need to determine where this fits in the scheme of your programming.
