Preface
ABOUT THIS BOOK
Mental disability is an impairment or long-term loss of mental function. It affects one’s thinking, feeling, mood, and behavior. Data from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) report that in 2017, there were an estimated 46.6 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States with any mental illness (AMI). This number represented 18.9 percent of all U.S. adults with mental disabilities, which includes conditions in varying degrees of severity.
Mental Disability and Rehabilitation, First Edition focuses on the prevalence, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment methods of common mental and psychotic disorders. It also discusses co-occurring and affective disorders, including mental-health and substance-use disorders. Information about the personal, social, and economic impact of mental disabilities, mental-health services, recovery, and rehabilitation is included. The legal requirements to qualify for disability status and the rights and benefits of people with mental disabilities are also discussed in detail. The book concludes with a glossary of mental-health terms and a directory of mental-health organizations.
