THE STORY BEHIND THE BOOK
BY LARRY DUGGER

Y our life is a story. It sends the clear and often unspoken message of who you are and what you value. If you ask me, a life without an intriguing storyline is no life at all. The plot twists you weren t expecting and the unforeseen cast of characters spin the grandest tales. The stories in this book are some of the best I ve heard-and not because I helped shape them but because, like David and Karin Holder, I believe our greatest adventures are found outdoors.
I was born and raised in the Ozark mountains of Missouri. Consequently, my love for hunting and all things outside began early in life. My fondest childhood memories revolve around long, lazy days spent swimming in the creek and time connecting with my family on hunting excursions. Being outside meant more to me than just not being inside. It was and still is where I feel most alive.
Like the Holders, I feel the responsibility to pass on my love for enjoying God s handiwork to the next generation. Chances are good that I wouldn t be who I am today if I hadn t spent many summer nights catching fireflies with my grandpa or tramping through the woods on a hunt with my dad and brother. If you ask me, we need more time in front of the campfire and less time in front of our electronic devices. A lot of our problems could be solved if we would take the time to relax, breathe in God s fresh air, and perhaps roast a marshmallow or two!
Being outdoors strengthens my relationship with God. This comes as no surprise to me. After all, He did create the earth for His most prized creation to enjoy. Every tree began as a seed that He planted. He poured the rivers out of the palms of His hands. Even the rocks were strategically placed by our Creator. The sunrise gets fresh paint every morning because we have a God who loves the beauty of a new day as much as we do!
I remember one hunt in particular that perfectly illustrates this point. It was opening morning of deer season, and I was sitting on top of a big hill that overlooked a valley where two ridges came together at the bottom, creating the perfect deer funnel. My family and I were hunting a buck we had named Buck Norris. This deer was the big one we were all hoping to take down.
As I sat there in a makeshift hunting blind composed of a few scruffy cedar trees, I noticed a bald eagle circling just above my head. He and I were apparently eyeing the same red squirrel playing in the walnut tree out in the open field. The eagle was looking for breakfast. I was trying to pass the time while I waited for Buck Norris to show up. A flock of wild turkeys were drinking from a pond to my right, and a group of does had just exited the timber on my left.
It was spitting snow, and the sun was coming up behind me. In that moment, surrounded on every side by nature, I had never felt closer to God. There was no sermon, choir, or worship song. It was just Jesus and me. Don t get me wrong-I love going to church and rarely miss (which is a good thing, because I m the pastor), but I can honestly say that hunting or anything related to the outdoors reminds me of the One who not only gave the outdoors to me but also gave His life for me.
You may be wondering how on earth a pastor and author from Missouri connected with David and Karin Holder, stars of the Raised Hunting TV show that airs on the Discovery Channel.
It was a typical Saturday morning at my house. My teenage sons were still sleeping, and my wife was sitting upstairs in her recliner, recovering from a week of teaching kindergarteners. I was downstairs making coffee. She said, You really need to come up here and watch this hunting show. I was surprised because even though she hunts, she rarely watches outdoor television. It s more than a hunting show, she added. I really like this family. They aren t just killing stuff; they re teaching life lessons and talking about God. I think you ll like it.
I went upstairs and sat down. That was the first time I saw David and Karin Holder. I could tell right away that my wife was right. The Holders were far more than hunters. They were teachers and people of strong faith.
Then it happened
You could call it an impression or perhaps information from God. I wasn t completely sure, but I felt like I heard an inward voice speak to me and the voice said, I want you to help the Holders write a book. Shocked, I looked at my wife and told her what had just happened.
What are you going to do? she asked.
I didn t really know, but I decided to check out the Raised Hunting website to see if there was any contact information. Sure enough, there was an email address. I quickly sent an email, explaining who I was and asking David and Karin if they had ever thought about writing a book. If so, I would be glad to help.
A few days went by, and I honestly thought nothing would come from my request. You can t imagine how excited I was when Karin emailed me back. She said they had talked about writing a book but didn t know where to start. They d been praying that God would help them. We arranged for me to come to their home in Iowa to discuss what a hunting book by the Holders might look like.
After a long conversation with David and Karin, we decided to team up on the material in this book.
This book is more than just a good idea; it s a God idea. My prayer for you is that you will be as inspired by the Holder family as my wife and I have been. David and Karin (and their sons, Warren and Easton) truly care about their viewers-and now their readers. This is the kind of book that invites you to buckle up and hold on. You are embarking on an outdoor adventure that will take you past hunting and into the life God has prepared for you.
THIS IS US

DAVID | If I m not out bowhunting, I m preparing to. If I m not preparing, I m talking about a bow hunt. And if you happen to catch me during one of those rare instances when I m not talking at all you can bet I m thinking about the animal, the draw, and the moment when it all comes together.
As far back as I can remember, all I ve ever wanted to do w
