Preface
About This Book
As they mature and prepare for adulthood, teens face many academic and social challenges. In addition, they must deal with developing bodies, sexual pressure from peers, and alluring media messages. Irrespective of whether and when teens choose to enter sexual relationships, they need accurate information about how their choices can affect their health and well-being. Nearly 171,674 babies were born to teen girls aged 15–19 years in 2019. The U.S. teen pregnancy rate is substantially higher than in other western industrialized nations, and racial/ethnic and geographic disparities in teen birth rates persist. Additionally, young people (aged 13–24) accounted for an estimated 21 percent of all new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) diagnoses in the United States in 2018. Nearly half of the 20 million new STDs reported each year were among young people, between the ages of 15 and 24.
Sexual and Reproductive Health Information for Teens, Sixth Edition includes reliable information that can help teens navigate the often confusing, conflicting messages they receive about sex. It also offers updated facts about the sexual issues today’s teens face. It describes reproductive anatomy and the physical and emotional changes that accompany puberty and emerging sexuality, including sensitive issues such as contraception, and sexual orientation. It offers facts about activities that can put teens at risk for unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The long-term consequences of untreated, incurable STDs are also discussed. Important information on how to protect your sexual health through various means namely sexual health education, sexual violence prevention, setting sexual boundaries, and abstinence is discussed. The book concludes with a directory of resources for further information.
How to Use This Book
This book is divided into parts and chapters. Parts focus on broad areas of interest; chapters are devoted to single topics within a part.
Part 1: What to Expect as You Enter Puberty explains that confusing time in life when a person’s body becomes sexually mature – a process known as “puberty.” It talks about male and female hormones, describes the specific changes that affect girls and boys in different ways, and provides facts about the mental changes and mood swings that often accompany the physical transformations of puberty. It also discusses issues related to emerging sexuality, such as body image, gender identity, sexual attraction, and details on what a healthy relationship with your partner looks and feels like.
Part 2: Your Body and Sexual Development includes an anatomical review of the female and male reproductive system. It addresses concerns adolescents often have about bodily changes such as breast development, the menstrual cycle, and wet dreams. An exclusive chapter on physical disability and sexuality provides useful information.
Part 3: Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Sexually Transmitted Infections includes information about chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, hepatitis B, syphilis, HIV/AIDS, and other diseases that are spread by sexual contact. It describes how different types of infections are transmitted, the steps that can be taken to avoid them, symptoms that may accompany infection, available treatments, and the long-term consequences associated with untreated infections and diseases for which no cure currently exists.
Part 4: Conditions Affecting Your Reproductive Health offers information about some conditions that affect the repr
