PREFACE
About This Book
Stress can be experienced not only by adults but also teens and children. Puberty hormones can induce some especially confusing emotional and physical challenges in adolescents. The stresses teens feel can be good or bad. Some stress in response to internal or external pressures and expectations helps teens to perform well and motivates them to do their best. On the other hand, unrealistic or overwhelming pressure stops being helpful, and it can have a negative impact on teens’ health, mood, productivity, relationships, and behavior. Furthermore, stress left unchecked may result in emotional and physical consequences that can last a lifetime.
Stress Information for Teens, Fourth Edition helps readers understand what stress is, its impact on teens, and realize how stress affects the adolescent mind, body, and behavior. Common causes of teen stress are discussed, and diseases and disorders having possible stress components (including asthma, back pain, chronic fatigue, peptic ulcers, multiple sclerosis (MS), hair loss, and insomnia) are explained. Facts about successful practices, therapies, and techniques for managing stress, handling anger, improving body image and self-esteem, and relieving stress (such as exercise, relaxation techniques, massage therapy, meditation, yoga, art therapies, pet interaction, and journaling) are also included. The book concludes with mobile apps for stress management and a directory of stress and stress management resources.
How to Use This Book
This book is divided into parts and chapters. Parts focus on broad areas of interest; chapters are devoted to single topics within a part.
Part 1: An Overview of Stress explains stress, its impact on teens, and the connection between personality and stress along with the health disparities among youth.
Part 2: Common Causes of Stress in Teens includes information about the most frequent sources of stress among adolescents, including test anxiety, peer pressure, friendship issues, dating concerns, teen pregnancy, and sports competition. It also discusses stressors related to family life experiences (such as financial difficulty, violence, substance abuse, and parental divorce) and social phobias. In addition, the causes and consequences of bullying and cyberbullying are addressed.
Part 3: Effects of Stress on the Body, Mind, and Behavior describes the various ways childhood stress can impact the entire lifespan. It discusses how stress affects the immune system, the potential link between stress and cancer. Stress-related mental and behavioral disorders are addressed, including eating disorders, body dysmorphic disorder, self-injury, and suicide. The special concerns associated with stresses related to loss and grief are also discussed.
Part 4: Diseases and Disorders with a Possible Stress Component explores how some illnesses and other health issues might be stress related. Chapters with information on medical conditions linked to stress triggers, such as asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis (MS), lupus, peptic ulcers, insomnia, ulcerative colitis, and bowel syndromes, are included. Also, physical manifestations of chronic stress, including back pain, and hair loss, are discussed.
Part 5: Stress Management provides information on stress management and stress reduction techniques, including exercise, yoga, tai chi, meditation, and relaxation.
